CGiii Comment

Has Desiree Akhavan taken too much on?!?!? Director, writer...star!

Perhaps...it all depends on whether you get her! Like her! Or, not!

Deadpan, cynical and, as dry as a bone left in the Mojave desert...Akhavan goes from one disastrous enounter to another with remarkable speed and consistency.

Or, is she a self-hating, narcissist (ooooh a paradoxical oxymoron) who completes the bisexual stereotype...self-centred, selfish? Ouch!

It's difficult to separate the director/writer/star from an autobiographical diatribe...if she is acting...then, good job. If she's being autobiographical...then, get a grip, get some help.

There are some genuinely entertaining set pieces...the threeway, the kiddy film - she does awkward really well.

Perhaps, she did take on too much...an independent director could have been beneficial to herself and the film. The potential for her being a very funny lady is there.

The(ir) Blurb...

For Shirin, being part of a perfect Persian family isn't easy. Acceptance eludes her from all sides: her family doesn't know she's bisexual, and her ex-girlfriend, Maxine, can't understand why she doesn't tell them. Even the six-year-old boys in her moviemaking class are too ADD to focus on her for more than a second. Following a family announcement of her brother's betrothal to a parentally approved Iranian prize catch, Shirin embarks on a private rebellion involving a series of pansexual escapades, while trying to decipher what went wrong with Maxine.
