ISLE OF DOGS tells the story of ATARI KOBAYASHI, 12-year-old ward to corrupt Mayor Kobayashi. When, by Executive Decree, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island, Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard-dog, Spots. There, with the assistance of a pack of newly-found mongrel friends, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture.

But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for ”The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

Written by Anne Fontaine and Pierre Trividic, the story revolves around Martin Clément, born Marvin Bijou, who ran away from his hometown and his family. He retells his story through a stage play that proves to be a smash hit. But at what price? Interestingly, while the film borrows its central plot from the novel by Edouard Louis (which outlines the childhood and teenage years of a young boy in a village, where he is shunned by the inhabitants and even by his own family when he comes out as a homosexual), it simultaneously takes the story a littler further, as the movie follows the character until the age of 23, whereas the storyline of the book comes to a halt when he starts secondary school. Delving into the topics of stigmatisation just because someone is different and the building of one’s identity, the plot also shows how the character eventually manages to dig himself out of a very distressing situation thanks to his various encounters.

Their port of call is a supernatural island with luxuriant vegetation and bewitching powers that holds a disturbing secret.
The main characters are gender-bending persons, who accept the idea of becoming “else” as a form of erotism.

Getting to what her instinct tells her to be the last pregnancy, Maria decides it’s time to form a true family. This choice leads to an inevitable consequence: the rebellion to Vincent, the man of his life.

Born in a poor family in a small Jewish shtetl in Ukraine, he dies in Madrid as the prince Michael Waszyński, Hollywood film producer and Polish aristocrat in exile. Along the way, in his colourful life, he assists Friedrich Murnau with the making of the film “Nosferatu,” infuriates the Third Reich’s minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, with his film “The Dybbuk,” and produces the most expensive motion picture in the history of cinema, “The Fall of the Roman Empire.” Those who had the opportunity to come across him, remembered him as an aristocrat, a lover of luxury, a liar, the wandering Jew and open homosexual and the husband of an Italian countess in one person.

It is with great pleasure that the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announce the titles of the 51 films on this year’s EFA Feature Film Selection, the list of feature fiction films recommended for a nomination for the European Film Awards 2017! With 31 European countries represented, the list once again illustrates the great diversity in European cinema.

In the coming weeks, the over 3,000 members of the European Film Academy will vote for the nominations in the categories European Film, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenwriter. The nominations will then be announced on 4 November at the Seville European Film Festival in Spain. A seven-member jury will decide on the awards recipients in the categories European Cinematographer, Editor, Production Designer, Costume Designer, Hair & Make-up Artist, Composer and Sound Designer.

The 30th European Film Awards with the presentation of the winners will take place on 9 December in Berlin.

• Brendon McDonald is first Iris winner to be shortlisted twice thanks to his film school!

Organisers of the Iris Prize have today (14/08/2017) announced details of the 35 short films competing for the annual LGBT short film award the Iris Prize. Presented annually during the October film festival of the same name in Cardiff, Wales the Iris Prize continues to be the world’s largest short film prize. Previous winners have gone on to produce more award winning short films with the generous £30,000 prize funded by The Michael Bishop Foundation.

Andrew Pierce, Iris Prize Chair, commented:

“These are once again a great mix of films from every corner of the world with 20 countries represented this year including a film which brings together the unlikely combination of Indonesia, Egypt, Netherlands and the US. Together these films give a very clear picture of what it’s like to be lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (lgbt) in 2017.

As we recognise the 50^th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales it is clear that much has yet to be done, especially in the countries not represented at Iris. It is distressing to be reminded that being gay is still a crime in way too many countries.

But there is much to celebrate and the shortlist of films includes some uplifting stories of young love as the new generation of lgbt people move away from the traditional coming out stories and focus on the joys of being true to themselves.

The 25 nominating partners located across the globe are our eyes and ears and they have once again helped make Iris the place to see the “best of the best”. I think Iris is a window on the world, and as our new strapline asks: “What will you see in Cardiff?”

Highlights form the 2017 shortlisted films include:

Brendon McDonald was the popular 2014 winner of the Iris Prize and the 3^rd Australian to take the Iris Prize. He went on to spend the summer in Cardiff working on his new Iris Prize funded short Spoilers before becoming a jury member the following year. Thanks to his film school in Sydney who submitted his latest short film The Dam, Brendon becomes the first Iris winner to be shortlisted twice. The Dam is the story of a lifelong friendship which comes under siege when two mature men visit the monolithic dam that defined their young lives and are confronted by feelings that were impounded long ago, but cannot be contained any longer.

Danny DeVito needs no introduction! Curmudgeons was directed, produced and stars the popular New York actor. The film has already played extensively on the international circuit including BFI Flare, London and Frameline in San Francisco who nominated the film, which features two men who discover love late in life.

So...it had to happen...a film is being made into a web series...please, let this not be a trend that continues! Otherwise, we're going to be swamped with sub-standard, re-hashed, bull-fodder!

The web series...the phenomena that it has become...is - unfortunately - here to stay. With the [oh too] rare exceptions, these self-promoting show-reels for wannabes are thorns in our sides...they are [all] made with the hope of them going viral and propelling the production crew and actors (usually one and the same) into the stratosphere of fame and fortune! Even [some] film festivals have started to screen back-to-back episodes!

Boy Culture, a decent enough film, made way back in 2006...is now being primped and primed for resurrection...in the form of a [dreaded] web series, consisting of 6 x 15-minute stories...aaaargh! They might pull it off, it might be worth watching...it may be one of those rare exceptions, there is a recognisable [and proven] collective talent...

Our advice: Just make a feature film instead!

Many of our places were home to, and shaped by, people who challenged conventional ideas of gender and sexuality. Fifty years after the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality, we’re exploring our LGBTQ heritage with a programme called Prejudice and Pride.

Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer – the last Squire of Felbrigg – was known as a shy, gentle, unmarried man who restored his exquisite ancestral home and bequeathed it to the nation.

Until now, official accounts of Robert’s life have offered only a partial story and neglected to acknowledge what was widely accepted by those who knew him, preferring instead to describe him as ‘the bachelor squire’…or ‘not one for the ladies’.

This film offers a new way of seeing Robert and his fascinating life.

14 Galas and 33 Special Presentations kick off TIFF '17

Of the 14 Galas and 33 Special Presentations, this first announcement includes 25 World Premieres, eight International Premieres, six North American Premieres, and eight Canadian Premieres, including works from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, India, Egypt, and Cambodia.

This year, TIFF offers a refreshed, more tightly curated Festival, with a renewed commitment to bold, director-driven programming, continued support of female filmmakers, and enough star power to fuel 400,000 festival-goers.

Today’s announcement cements that the future is female (and so is TIFF’s programming), with Gala films from emerging and established filmmakers that include Kings by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, whose 2015 Festival feature Mustang earned an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Film; Mary Shelley by Haifaa Al Mansour, the first female Saudi director; Dee Rees’ Mudbound, an adaptation of Hillary Jordan’s novel about racial tensions in the Jim Crow South; Susanna White’s Woman Walks Ahead, starring forever-favourite Jessica Chastain; and a big must-watch for every Canadian: Long Time Running, Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier’s documentary on The Tragically Hip’s emotional and powerful 2016 final tour.

The sporting life also takes centre stage at TIFF this year, as Steve Carell meets his match with (honourary Canadian) Emma Stone in Battle of the Sexes; Margot Robbie chases Olympic gold in I, Tonya; Paul Rudd goes from MLB to OSS in The Catcher was a Spy; and Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany navigate the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing in David Gordon Green’s Stronger.

Somewhat reminiscent of My Chemical Romance...

FX sends in the clowns when AHS: Cult debuts Tuesday, September 5. Cast includes Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Alison Pill, Colton Haynes and Adina Porter. Lena Dunham also has been announced for the season.

The life of celebrated but reclusive author, J.D. Salinger, who gained worldwide fame with the publication of his novel, "The Catcher in the Rye".

The film, which is an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love.

Directed by Ava DuVernay from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee based upon the beloved novel by Madeleine L’Engle, “A Wrinkle in Time” is produced by Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand with Doug Merrifield serving as executive producer. Native American heroes' comic book adventures often explore identity and culture. Kerry Fine (Arizona State University) shows how Arigon Starr's reservation hero Hubert Logan, a.k.a. Super Indian, fills a representational gap for the non-native audience while taking up distinctly Native issues in the ongoing fight against injustice. Rebecca Lush (California State University San Marcos) makes the case that Jeffery Veregge's art in Marvel's recent Red Wolf provides a Native inter-text that contrasts with naturalistic narrative panels for commentary on the storyline and characters. Sara Spurgeon (Texas Tech University) argues that Maya Lopez's vision quest in David Mack's Daredevil: Echo Vision Quest is twofold: both a spiritual journey she takes as a Native American guided by the shaman she meets on the reservation and a quest for a visual form of language with which she can communicate as a deaf person in a hearing world, while still maintaining her identity as a Native American in a white world.

Chicano Comics

In Mexico and other Latin American countries, reading comic books and comic strips has long been an accepted form of entertainment and even a potential mode of cultural and political learning and transgression. As a storytelling medium, the comic is especially attractive to Latinos and Latinas. Comic books cost little to make. They offer the possibility of a grassroots-style distribution on the Internet and by word of mouth. Most American comics fans are unfamiliar with Latino comics south of the border or indeed the magical realist world presented in mural, painting, and even graffiti form. This is the third continuous year Comic-Con has welcomed Latino artists, cartoonists, and exhibitors to talk about graphic narratives in the Chicano culture. This panel is honored to have the presence of Juan Felipe Herrera, the recent poet laureate of both California and the entire U.S., as well as renowned Peruvian muralist Mario Torero, former Logan resident Lalo "La Cucaracha" Alcaraz,Mexican graphic novelist Charles Glaubitz (whose latest graphic novel, Star Seeds, is the subject of an exhibition by the Bread and Salt Gallery in Logan), and the San Diego Free Press cartoonist Joaquin Junco Jr. (Junco Canché). David Favela is the owner of Border X at the center of the Logan community, which provides music nearly every night and a gallery featuring local artists.

Five films will be competing for the 5th Sebastiane Latino Award

The award will recognise the Latin American film of the year that best reflects sexual and gender diversity

The Sebastiane Latino Award is presented each year by the Gehitu association to the Latin American feature film that best defends the demands and values of lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals. The jury is made up of experts on Latin American LGBTI films (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Personas) and members of GEHITU (LGBT Association of the Basque Country). After watching most of the films released in the last year, the jury would like to highlight the films that focus on female characters that portray the intimate reality of transsexual women. “These are portrayals that steer clear from stereotypes like prostitution, although their characters become the focus of stories where the situation they face on a daily basis is often difficult”, the jury points out.

Androgyny and the drag world have also been well-represented, they explain, “showing how fine the line can be that separates one sex from another. This lack of definition, a third sex, is a search for an identity of their own that goes beyond physical aspects or labels, because what always lies underneath is just a human being”.

They conclude that the so-called “new kinds of families” are also still present, “showing that they are no longer so uncommon but are valid emotional variants”.

The films competing in the final for the 5th Sebastiane Latino Award are:

Corpo Elétrico by Marcelo Caetano (Brazil)

Elías is new in Sao Paulo, and works around the clock in a clothing factory and spends his free time in flings with other men. Summer is coming, it’s getting really hot and they need to finish the job before the end of the season. With very little free time Elías tries to find his place in old and new circles of friends that are ways of facing up to loneliness.

Primavera by Santiago Giralt (Argentina)

This is a choral story, which tries to show that unusual families have the same problems as all the others do. It focuses on Leopoldo, an 11-year-old boy who has grown up surrounded by artists. During the three months of spring (the film starts on the 21st of September and ends on Xmas Day), the boy discovers love and heartbreak for the first time.

Señorita María, la falda de la montaña by Rubén Mendoza (Colombia)

Miss María Luisa lives in the mountains in Boavita, a conservative, Catholic peasant village. She is 44 years old and although she was born as a boy, she dresses and feels that she is woman. Alone and rejected since she was small, María Luisa has found an unwavering strength inside herself and in simple acts of solidarity by her neighbours. Her faith in the Virgin Mary and her love of animals also provide solace for this endearing character.
A disturbing, deeply humane portrait that forces us to witness beauty and the sinister side of life, what is natural and rooted in culture; what is unique and cannot be denied and the strength of collective power.

Una mujer fantástica (A Fantastic Woman) by Sebastián Leilo (Chile-Germany-Spain)

Marina, a young moonlighting waitress, plans a future together with Orlando, who is twenty years older than her. Orlando doesn’t feel well. Marina takes him to the emergency department but Orlando dies when he gets to the hospital. However, instead of being able to mourn his death, Marina, because she is transsexual woman, will be forced to confront the same forces that she has fought against all her life to become what she is now: a complex, strong, passionate… fantastic woman.

El diablo es magnífico by Nicolás Videla (Chile)

Manu is an androgynous effeminate guy, but he doesn’t reject his sexuality, he just prefers to ignore it. A Chilean immigrant in Paris who is tired of the hostility and instability he faces in the city, he decides to go back to Chile, after ten years in France. During these last few days he will follow various routes that recall love and sex.

Initially, we thought it wise not to comment upon yet another actor talking bollocks...but, Mr Garfield caused quite a furore...with his being a gay man right now, just “without the physical act”.

And the LGBT-news-reporting world went a little bit mad!!!

Now, in our experience, when something is reported in the [LGBT] media...we wait a few days and then decide whether to comment or not...because, more times than not, things are blown out of all proportion and/or are taken out of context...all in the name of getting a juicy little soundbite and a by-line!!!

This is a case in point...

Mr Garfield has responded to the controversy surrounding remarks he made earlier this month about gay men.

The British actor, 33, was discussing his preparation for his role as a gay man living with Aids in the London revival of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America when said: “I am a gay man right now just without the physical act”.

Asked how he researched for the role of Prior Walter, Garfield had replied: “As far as I know, I am not a gay man. Maybe I’ll have an awakening later in my life, which I’m sure will be wonderful and I’ll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I’m secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well.

“I adore it, but a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role?”

Adding that he had seen “every single series” of drag queen reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race during his preparation for the show, he explained: “My only time off during rehearsals – every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru.

“This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act – that’s all.”

A word to the wise...sometimes it's better to just say nothing at all! And, if you do say something rather silly...well, it keeps publicists and [hack] journalists busy!

The nominations for the 69th Annual Emmy Awards were unveiled on Thursday morning.

The honorees were announced at the Television Academy’s Wolf Theatre at the Saban Media Center in North Hollywood by “Veep” actress Anna Chlumsky, “S.W.A.T.” star Shemar Moore, and Television Academy CEO Hayma Washington at 8:30 a.m. PT.

HBO’s “Westworld” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” tied for the most nominations for the 2017 Emmy Awards, earning the most with 22 each.

As Peak TV reaches new heights, it’s only fitting that this year saw a bigger Emmy ballot. Drama series had the largest number of submissions with 180, with best actor in a drama close behind at 140, and best actress in a drama up next at 113.

The Emmy Awards, hosted by Stephen Colbert, will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. PT. on CBS.

‘The Barbara Hammer Lesbian Experimental Filmmaking Grant is application-based and will be awarded to benefit projects in any stage of development, from concept to exhibition. Applications for the first year will be open August 1 through September 30, and the winner will be awarded on December 4 by judges including filmmakers Cheryl Dunye and Dani Leventhal.’

She has teamed up with NYC-based non-profit Queer | Art to create an annual $5,000 grant for lesbian experimental filmmakers. The grant will be handed out by a rotating panel of judges.

GOD’S OWN COUNTRY, GLORY, DONKEYOTE AND THE FULL STORY RECEIVE TOP AWARDS

BEST OF THE FEST FILMS ANNOUNCED

Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) today announced the Award Winners for this year’s 71^st edition, as well as confirming the Best of the Fest films. 151 features from 46 countries screened at this year’s Festival, with the jurors viewing an extensive and varied selection of shorts, documentaries and features since the start of the Festival.

AWARD WINNERS

Commenting on the incredibly high standard of entries at this year’s Festival and the quality of the submissions they were judging, the juries stressed that they had some tough decisions to make in choosing one winner in each category, and gave special mentions to several films.

THE MICHAEL POWELL AWARD FOR BEST BRITISH FEATURE FILM

The winner of the prestigious Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film went to British filmmaker Francis Lee’s directorial debut, God’s Own Country, which received its UK Premiere at the Festival. The Michael Powell Award honours imagination and creativity in British filmmaking. The film was supported by the BFI and Creative England using funds from the National Lottery.

The winner was chosen by the Michael Powell Jury comprised of award-winning composer David Arnold, International Film Festival Rotterdam Artistic Director, Bero Beyer, and BAFTA-nominated film and television writer Andrea Gibb.

The Michael Powell Jury said:

“We present the Michael Powell Award to God’s Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, a film with a singularity of storytelling and consistency of vision. Assured direction with raw and endearing performances result in a film that has an authenticity that is both tender and brutal, a juxtaposition of landscape and emotion, which explores the question of what it means to be a man.”

Francis Lee said: 

“I am thrilled with this honour for God's Own Country, especially when you consider the British films that have won before. After premiering at Sundance and Berlin it has been wonderful to see how the film has created a real resonance with people and that is why the Michael Powell Award feels so brilliant.”

THE AWARD FOR BEST PERFORMANCE IN A BRITISH FEATURE FILM

The award for Best Performance in a British Feature Film went jointly to actresses Emily Beecham for her role in Daphne and Anne Reid for her roles in Kaleidoscope and Romans, and was also selected by the Michael Powell jurors.

The Michael Powell Jury said:

“In the category of Best Performance in a British Feature Film, the Michael Powell Jury recognises two actors, Emily Beecham and Anne Reid, portraying fascinating, complex and flawed characters who didn't strive for your affection but commanded your attention - real in the best sense of the word.”

Emily Beecham said:

“I'm so honoured and thrilled, and would really like to thank the jury and the Edinburgh International Film Festival for supporting our film. It was an extraordinary experience working on the unique and special Daphne. I wouldn't have won this award without my wonderful team: Director Peter Mackie Burns, writer Nico Mensinga and producers Tristan Goligher and Valentina Brazzini! Thanks again EIFF, having once been a festival Trailblazer you have a very special place in my heart!”

Robbie Allan, Senior Screen Executive at Creative Scotland said: 

“We are delighted that Emily’s outstanding performance as Daphne has been recognised by the jury. THE AWARD FOR BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM

The award for Best International Feature Film went to Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov’s Glory, which received its UK Premiere at this year’s Festival. The winner was chosen by the International Jury comprised of film, stage and television actor Bernard Hill, actress and writer Shauna Macdonald, and Dallas Film Festival Artistic Director James Faust.

The International Jury said:

“Deftly acted, beautifully photographed and directed, we loved this film. The subtlety of the performances and the story-telling was defined with such a lightness of touch which led to the immoral and moral choices having a heavy impact on this Jury.”

Petar Valchanov said: 

“It is a great honour for us to receive this award from Edinburgh International Film Festival, which has been preserving the traditions of good cinema the longest and carrying them over the generations. This award is a recognition not only for us, but also for Bulgarian cinema, which is currently on the rise again. Thank you for being there!"

THE AWARD FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM

The award for Best Documentary Feature Film went to Chico Pereira’s contemplative Donkeyote, which studied Pereira’s uncle whose wonderful spirit of adventure belies all of his 73 years. Special mention was given to Thomas Riedelsheimer’s Leaning Into The Wind.

This year’s jury comprised British actor Ralph Ineson, award-winning documentary filmmaker Simon El Habre, and British Council Film Programme Manager, Wendy Mitchell.

The Documentary Jury said:

“For our main prize, we would like to honour a film that expertly blends the tools of documentary and fiction. Chico Pereira has a special relationship with his subjects, human and animal, and shows a warmth and respect for his characters. This truly cinematic film draws us in by slowly revealing its characters and emotions in a moving portrait.”

Chico Pereira said:

“On behalf of the entire Donkeyote team I'd like to say thank you so much for this recognition. For some of us who live or lived in Edinburgh, it holds an extra special meaning: our formative cinema experiences have been with EIFF, and just to return for our UK premiere is an honour in itself. I dedicate this also to my family, and in particular Manolo and Gorrión who teach us how to be truly modern and to enjoy life.”

Leslie Finlay, Screen Officer, Creative Scotland, commented:

“Huge congratulations to Director, Chico Pereira, Producer, Sonja Henrici and the rest of the team behind Donkeyote. This EIFF award is a significant recognition of their talent and hard work and is testament to the quality of documentary filmmaking coming out of Scotland. We’re very proud to have supported this wonderful production.”

THE AWARD FOR BEST SHORT FILM

The award for Best Short Film went to The Full Story, directed by Daisy Jacobs, with Kevin Pickering’s Close to the Bone and Gordon Napier’s 1745 receiving a special mention from the jurors. The jury was comprised of Screen International Star of Tomorrow Charity Wakefield, journalist and author Marina Richter, and journalist Matthew Turner.

The Short Film Jury said:

“For its originality, level of technical artistry and emotional poignancy, we are awarding the prize for best short film to The Full Story by Daisy Jacobs, and co-director, Christopher Wilder.  What struck us in particular was the perfect marriage between form and content, in particular the way in which the fluidity between the live action and animation perfectly represented the transitions between memory and the past.”

Daisy Jacob’s said:

“It is an honour to receive the Best Short Film Award from such a prestigious Festival, we are delighted.”

THE MCLAREN AWARD FOR BEST BRITISH ANIMATION

Voted for by the Festival audience, the McLaren Award for Best British Animation, supported by the British Council, this year goes to Paloma Baeza’s Poles Apart.

THE EIFF WORKS IN PROGRESS WINNER

The winner of this year’s EIFF Works in Progress and recipient of the £2,500 award is Piano to Zanskar by Michal Sulima.

“We are delighted to have been selected for the EIFF Works in Progress award this year. It was a real privilege to be part of the showcase and to pitch our documentary to an audience full of industry professionals, which resulted in a number of meetings and expressions of interest. It's only fair to say that we were heartily impressed by the quality of all the films presented, so the award comes to us as a great surprise! Given that our film has been entirely self-funded, it will go a long way towards helping us reach completion. We're very grateful to the wonderful team at the EIFF for giving us this opportunity.”

The aforementioned Award winners were announced today ahead of Sunday’s Closing Night Gala, which concludes the 12-day Festival with the World Premiere of Mark Gill’s highly anticipated England Is Mine.

The ladies are back...

Now graduated from college and out in the real world where it takes more than a cappella to get by, the Bellas return in Pitch Perfect 3, the next chapter in the beloved series that has taken in more than $400 million at the global box office.

After the highs of winning the World Championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.

Oh joy be upon us...here we are at the 71st Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017...

We'll be covering as many films as we possibly can...and, we'll throw in a few shorts too!

The big news - this year - is the opening film: God's Own Country, directed by Francis Lee...for a mainstream film festival like Edinburgh to show an unashamedly 'gay' film as its opening gala will - no doubt - raise a few eyebrows. Our eyebrows are doing somersaults!

It's definitely a sign of our much-improved times! And, although we don't know much about the closing film, England is Mine, directed by Mark Gill...considering it's a portrait of Steven Patrick Morrissey, surely there will be a soupçon of subtext...! We shall wait and see/watch! Edinburgh has - most definitely - become the leading light in LGBT-friendly, mainstream film festivals. For that we applaud and thank you.

Without further ado...onto the films...below are the films we've selected. Without a doubt, others will be added as we gobble up recommendations faster than we can devour a packet of those delicious 'Sausage & Tomato' crisps...are they available anywhere other than Scotland?!?

We will be reviewing the films as we see them, Edinburgh gives the press ample opportunities to see as many films as possible...there are the press screening, the videoteque (a dark room full of computers!) and the public screenings! 

Reviews, featured on this page, will be short, succinct and devilishly informative...if the film is in our main database, a more verbose review will appear (in time)...just click on the poster and you will be taken to that page...but, please, be patient...we are running around like headless chickens...the full review will take a wee bit of time to appear!

For those of you who asked...we only tweet the films we liked/loved/adored...the others, well...those are [still] the pride and joy of their filmmakers & company...hours of hardship went into their making...they might not float our boat...but, we ain't gonna sink theirs! At least...not during the festival!

Day 1...

The rain stayed away for the red carpet...the celebs arrived, were duly photographed and after many double-cheek(y) kisses, settled into their seats. The customary opening speech...director and cast were introduced...the lights dimmed [as they do] and the opening film of the 71st Edinburgh International Film Festival began.

God's Own Country:
Directed by Francis Lee

Yes, yes, yes...we've heard all about this being the British 'Brokeback' - sheep farmers in the wilderness! But, this is so much more! 

It's raw and relatable. It's rural and real. It screams...love can be found in the remotest of places!

Bleak...most definitely. Heart-warming...the cockles of your heart will be on fire! Wanna see chemistry on-screen? This is a reaction like no other!

A deft, detailed, delicious triumph! Thank you Mr Lee, for sharing.

And now...it's time for the party!!! Heaven opened (not the one in London)...when it comes to rain, Scotland never disappoints! It's bouncing off of the cobbles!

I have died and gone to Heaven (not the one in London...but, this one will do just fine)...Gin bars everywhere!!! Reviews may be somewhat delayed....

Day 2...

Brother Jakob:
Directed by Eli Roland Sachs

Ooooh Gawd...oops, that should be Allah! 

This little prig changes his religion as often as he changes his knickers. Made by his brother, Jakob has absolutely nothing - worthwhile - to say. Yet, his brother insists on letting him spout on and on about his [temporary] beliefs! The urge to walk out was overwhelming...yet, I resisted. The urge to fall asleep...especially after all that Gin...to be honest, a few 'noddy' moments were to be had!

A film about a self-centred, dangerous boy (who ought to be in intensive therapy)...that needn't have been made, not only because it was excruciatingly boring...but, because...the film and Jakob are contemptible on so many levels! Disrespectful to a religion!

Raid Dingue (R.A.I.D. Special Unit):
Directed by Dany Boon

French farce is an acquired taste...it's like Marmite. I hate Marmite.

But...Alice Pol delivers a fine comedic performance. It's almost like watching an updated Private Benjamin...albeit, in French, transposed to the police and - sadly - falls apart halfway through!

There's a gay pride march, a couple of villainous transvestites...and, a damn fine firework display. Alice Pol makes it...unfortunately, the script breaks it!

Tom of Finland:
Directed by Dome Karukoski

Not being a fan of 'Tom of Finland' - this film was approached with a detectable amount of trepidation. Never pre-judge a film!

Seriously...this is not the film (nor a story) that was expected. It's been said - before - about an other film [see above]...this is so, so much more!

The colour palette is art. The insight is a revelation. His influence is indisputable. As for the backlash...a sad sign-of-those-tumultuous-tragic-times. This film is a remedy...

This film gives Touko Laaksonen a legacy...and, a legitimate, well-earned place in LGBT history.

Day 3...

Final Portrait:
Directed by Stanley Tucci

Do a little research on James Lord beforehand...it will help understand the nuance of Armie Hammer's performance. Lord's homosexuality is subdued...almost to the point of invisibility...apart from one line, to paraphrase: I was getting excited... until I knew you were a woman!

By stark contrast, there is nothing subdued about Geoffrey Rush...as the chain-smoking, madcap, Giacometti. It's a safe bet to wager...Mr Rush will be collecting a few notable awards for the cantankerous charisma he bestows upon the artist. Deservedly so!

With an exceptional colour palette, Final Portrait is a visual feast...as you would expect for an 'art film' - our only gripe, the constantly moving camera! To be fair, in a post-film chat with a fellow reviewer who 'liked' the camera's movement...I stand firm: Art is static, the movement (and magic) are contained within the frame...that's what makes it art! No doubt, a discussion that will rage on...

A fine, fine film nonetheless.

Okja:
Directed by Bong Joon Ho

A kid's film about a super pig, genetically bred to feed the starving populace?!? It most certainly is not!

This is a cinematic smörgåsbord...it's like going to the finest Tapas Bar and ordering everything on the menu!

Heart-stopping, jaw-dropping, breath-taking, side-splitting, eye-watering, toe-curling cinema!!!

Annie's Song!?! Totally bizarre and genius.

We can enthuse no more...do yourself a favour...watch!

Song to Song:
Directed by Terrence Malick

Hold onto your hats, babies...this ain't gonna be pretty! Ever heard the one about the Emperor and some new clothes?!? Well, that's what we think about Mr Malick...

Packed to the rafters with crowd-pulling A-listers...you can almost hear the audible, collective contempt as the entrance-paying audiences around the world realise that they have been conned out of their hard-earned cash and stripped of 129 precious minutes of their lives...for this!!!

Obviously improvised from start to finish, Mr Malick gives himself a writing credit...cue: Howls of ridicule and laughter. Well, Mr Malick if your filmmaking career ever goes tits up (as it should, if there is any justice in the filmmaking world)...rest assured, Hallmark cards will give you a job. You show an exemplary ability as a writer of [cringe-worthy] cheese.

Patti Smith, as much as we love you...it's time to wash! And, what the hell are you doing in this film? The same goes for Iggy and Rotten! And on that note...moving on...

Day 4...

Here are four films that deal with teenage sexuality...with varying degrees of success.

Freak Show:
Directed by Trudie Styler

This will certainly polarise opinion...young Mr Lawther gives a [damn fine] credible performance...but, as a rich-kid with gender identity issues and a penchant for camping it up [at every conceivable opportunity]...the audience may not [or may] get entirely behind him...at first. But...be patient, he does grow on you...amid the diamante and darkness. It's that...I'd-rather-be-sexually-confused-in-my-mansion-than-in-a-homeless-hostel kind-of-thing! Struggling heirs elicit little empathy! Mr Lawther does a remarkable job...in shifting that opinion!

Now, it has to be said...Bette Midler is tragically [and mind-bogglingly] under-used...she and Mr Lawther could have easily presented a little cabaret performance [in the mansion] for our delectation and titillation...alas, no...although the script was crying out for it! The director, perhaps, was not in-tune with the audience. It's Bette Midler for Christ's sake...you got her...use her! She ain't cheap!

Freak Show embraces and celebrates individuality and diversity. Despite our 'quibbly moanings', it's a great little film. It delivers the finest of messages...live and let live...all the world's a stage...I am what I am...

...if only the same could be said for our next film...a film we were looking so forward to...

EMO: The Musical:
Directed by Neil Triffett

First and foremost, we LOVED the short film.

Second...not all good shorts deserve to become a feature...especially when the writer/director doesn't have the material to fill the allocated time!

Look...there's absolutely no point in crucifying this film [it does that all by itself]...unlike Freak Show...this film delivers a message so contemptible [it hurts!]...conform to the norm! WTF...it ends up being a pro-Christian, happy-clappy assault to the senses. ..the EMO ditches his mascara and everyone ends up singing...apart from the gay kid?!? WTF! Not, what we suspect was...the director's intention...because, babycakes, it does come over a trifle homophobic! WTF!

Bad Kids of Crestview Academy:
Directed by Ben Browder

Remember Farscape...the face of...Ben Browder...well, this is his directorial debut...and, here end-eth that directorial career.

When will filmmakers accept the simple fact that you cannot make a cult film...the audience makes a film...cult!

There is a line in this catastrophe: This should be good - oops.

Quite easily, the worst film in the festival [thus far]...it even surpasses all that experimental poop!

Goodbye Berlin [Tschick]:
Directed by Fatih Akin

There is a God!!!

And, there is Fatih Akin...who made the astounding Auf Der Anderen Seite...

We're not going to say too much about this fine film...because, it would ruin it.

Anand Batbileg is a revelation...he lights up the screen, even when vomiting...and, Tristan Göbel compliments this little duo beautifully.

Sit back, relax and enjoy...a lovely, lovely film.

Day 5...Experimental Sunday...

A Heart of Love [Serce Milosci]:
Directed by Lukasz Ronduda 

A couple of performance artists are facing a crisis in their relationship...

The performance artist underworld is an unfathomable place for the uninvited/uninterested. Despite some striking imagery and some truly cacophonous music, Mr Ronduda's invitation to be a voyeur will only appeal to those who are unfathomable and connoisseurs of some truly cacophonous music!

When We Were Wild [Una Vez Fuimos Salvajes]:
Directed by Carmen Bellas

There's nothing wild about this film...in fact, there's absolutely nothing to this film.

It's merely an exercise in point-and-shoot whatever appears in front of the camera by a director who - obviously - forgot to say 'CUT'!

This is not a documentary...there's no artistry, no composition, no revelation. Nada!

It's a film festival, we expect and accept these little blunders!

Land of Not Knowing:
Directed by Steve Sanguedolce

Suicide is like a mirror...

Yeah...it's not the cheeriest of films...

Suicidal contemplations accompanied by random, splattered images.

Dare we repeat ourselves: It's a film festival, we expect and accept these little cinematic challenges!

Day 6...

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea:
Directed by Dash Shaw

We were asked how we pick the films that go into this review...considering Edinburgh offers a multitude of cinematic delights, it's a good question to ask!

Obviously, anything with LGBT content goes in, anything we suspect that may have LGBT content (and, let's face it, most films nowadays seem to have a snifter of LGBT content somewhere between the opening and closing credits) and, to be truthful, just about anything that tickles our fancy. Attached names is a 'biggy' too...this film features the voices of Susan Sarandon and John Cameron Mitchell. Of course we're gonna watch this!

What a mistake...it looks like a work-in-progress that should progress no further! The animation is awful, the story (think Poseidon!) is nonsense...big voices don't necessarily make bad films good! We rest our case!

Vampire Cleanup Department [Gao Geung Jing Dou Fu]:
Directed by Sin-Hang Chiu & Pak-Wing Yan

This is going to be quick...

When the old [bag] lady popped out of the box and the student delegation (in the audience) laughed uncontrollably...we walked out. Wasting a mere 7 minutes of our time.

Most definitely, not our cup-of-tea.

A Wedding [Noces]:
Directed by Stephan Streker 

When the end credits started to roll...no-one moved, not a sound was heard.

When that happens...you know that you have just made a deeply affecting film...especially when it's a press screening!

It starts in a dark place...a young Muslim girl discusses abortion with a health care professional. The issues that this film addresses would raze the mightiest roof. From a Skype wedding to hymen reconstruction...this film goes where few [if any] have gone before.

In the current climate...this is bold, brave, dangerous filmmaking. This is what cinema is all about! We thank you.

Day 7...

Operation Mekong [Mei Gong he xing dong]:
Directed by Dante Lam

140 minutes of pure adrenalin...

China is - rapidly - proving that it can give Hollywood a run for its money...and some!

Unlike the Hollywood obligation to include inane sentimentality into its action movies...this has none. Okay, it's not perfect...it does have the villain coming across as a caricature...but, hey, if it works for Hollywood...

The body count is uncountable...the editing, cinematography...top notch. It's a rollercoaster ride...with a few glitches. Hollywood must be worried!

Attraction [Prityazhenie]:
Directed by Fedor Bondarchuk

Russia is - rapidly - proving that it can give Hollywood a run for its money...

The SFX are pretty damn impressive...and, the score! A swelling beauty!

Admittedly, this does tick all the 'young adult' boxes...and, seemingly, the 'young adults' of Russia flocked to the cinemas to watch it!

Considering it was made in [dictator] Putin's Russia...it delivers some incredible [and risqué] messages...it's anti-war, there's a gay kid, government defiance...and, it's damn fine entertainment to boot!

The Little Hours:
Directed by Jeff Baena

Film festivals deliver surprises, delights, disappointments and the downright awful...this is a sweet, sweet surprise. Foul-mouthed, frisky nuns with a soupcon of the demonic!

Pasolini & Boccaccio must be turning somersaults in their graves...the irreverence [of the source material] is a f**king revelation!

We loved it! To be honest...it could have gone so much further...but, alas, ratings dictate!

Just Charlie:
Directed by Rebekah Fortune

This is hard...we wanted - so much - to take this film into our hearts. Alas, it merely scratched at the surface...and, sadly, left no lasting impression.

The only insight...puberty blockers! Mentioned briefly, unexplained...and that was it for the complexity of the complexity of transition. Why use the footballing metaphor?!? Too damn obvious...the inference could be construed as a little insulting... football star of the future gives it all up to wear a dress...that's how it comes across!!! Just a little bit too tabloid.

The transition was done via [hideous] hairbands [is that what you call them?!?] and some grubby-looking cardigans. She's a young woman...dress her as if she's a young woman!!! Why make her look so dowdy?!?  Disappointing...so, so disappointing.

Day 8...

I Dream in Another Language [Sueño en otro idioma]:
Directed by Ernesto Contreras

Just when you least expect it...a magical little film pops up and - quite literally - takes your breath away. There are moments when you will gasp, cry, laugh and scream at the screen...in frustration...as this stubborn old bugger remains a stubborn old bugger.

It's a beautiful looking film. It's original. It's intelligent...it's everything you want from a film. It is - without a doubt - our best of the fest!

Double Date:
Directed by Benjamin Barfoot

Bloody marvellous!

The snappiest of scripts...two actors born to bounce off of each other, a pace that never lets up and a thumping soundtrack.

Rest assured...British independent filmmaking is alive and well and kicking...the talent - on both sides of the camera - is plain to see.

Rage:
Directed by Sang-il Lee

Way too long with not enough rage!

After a strong start, it fizzles out rather rapidly...it's a bit of a chore to get to the end!

There are three distinct storylines/suspects...one could have easily been cut, our preference would have been the 'Daddy's Girl' - she's so annoying - but, to be honest, any one could have gone...thereby ensuring a tighter, more intriguing film.

Strange Weather:
Directed by Katherine Dieckmann

Holly Hunter plays Holly Hunter...as a tough-nut, non-conforming, grieving mother...and, to a certain degree, she pulls it off.

Now, there is actually a built-in ending that would have made this film fly into the stratosphere...instead, and [in our humble opinion] erroneously, Katherine Dieckmann chose to go down the safer route...what could have been a mighty statement on the individuality of grief and the grieving process...became a rather diluted affair.

Oooooh the potential to have a collective jaw-drop was there...if only...!

That Good Night:
Directed by Eric Styles

Lesson 1 - when adapting a stage play for the big screen...bring something new to the table.

Kaleidoscope:
Directed by Rupert Jones

The blurb basically ruins the film...this is a [dowdy, as in the dowdiest] modern-day Psycho...!

Where Psycho - in it's time - delivered a real shocker of a climax. Kaleidoscope is a mind-boggling trek through a shattered timeline...it's all over the place! You never know where you are from one minute to the next.

As much as we love Toby Jones and Anne Reid...you will feel nothing for their on-screen personas. By the end...well, we all know the end of Psycho...this 'end' was a major anti-climax.

Becoming Cary Grant:
Directed by Mark Kidel

An affectionate film...indeed, [selectively] informative...with a rather erratic timeline.

But...what about that great big elephant - dressed in a tutu - standing on one leg in the middle of the room whistling Dixie?!?

Cary Grant lived with a man for years...not a mention. You can almost hear - his daughter - Jennifer's demands for her appearance/endorsement...do NOT mention Randolph Scott! The LSD is fine! If Scott's in, I'm out!

A biography with great big chunks missing!

Access All Areas:
Directed by Bryn Higgins

One for the kiddies...or, rather, young adults...not quite sure to be honest. It's a film that forgot to target an audience...if you're gonna go for wide appeal...make sure the film has wide appeal. Oooops.

This is Glee versus High School Musical on scooters...too silly to be taken seriously, too cheesy to appeal to the YAs...not enough toe-tapping songs for the kiddies.

Interesting to see how it will do at the box office...we may have gotten it completely wrong!

Day 10...

Story of a Girl:
Directed by Kyra Sedgwick

It's a made-for-TV movie that packs one hell of a punch...and, it all hinges on one jaw-dropping revelation - where sympathies switch in a moment...It's almost like witnessing a paradigm shift!

Kevin Bacon's gay pizza-parlour-proprietor gets a little lost amid the hormones...but, he does supply a voice of reason (and some star-quality) to this directorial debut by his wife. Kyra Sedgwick has made a wise choice by starting small and delivering a rather significant emotional wallop. Impressive, to say the least.

The Marker:
Directed by Justin Edgar

UK independent filmmaking does not come any better than this little under-publicised surprise!

Tense...to say the least. Dark...as in the depths of night. Surely, big things will beckon for Frederick Schmidt, his intensity is mesmerising.

But...the star of the show has to be Justin Edgar's direction...crisp, clean, precise. All those close-ups...perfectly matches the prevailing menace that runs throughout, it never lets up. Seriously...edge-of-the-seat stuff!

The Dark Mile:
Directed by Gary Love

What happened? Did the money run out? Did the ideas dry up? Because...just when the spookiness starts, it ends!

Look...the Scottish tourist board ain't gonna be liking this mismanaged affair...there's no friendly Scottish folk to be found anywhere...and, that tartan 'tammie' with ginger trim...not a good idea. Alas, the film was devoid of good ideas!

Sheila Hancock's accent...what was she thinking...that accent, this film...did she just happen to be in the neighbourhood filming Edie at the time?!? Quids in...quid pro quo!

In Dubious Battle:
Directed by James Franco

James, James, James, James...you've done the commercial, you've done art-house, you've been 'gay' so often that Rupaul is considering having you on the next Drag Race!

Look...the problem is rather simple...few actor-cum-directors can direct themselves...Mr Franco, despite a fine cast and a damn fine story, an ego got in the way of the story-telling!

In future, it would be prudent to do one thing or the other...preferably, the other!

Day 11...

The Erlprince [Królewicz Olch]:
Directed by Kuba Czekaj

Sci-fi...perhaps the most difficult genre to do on a tight budget. Often...an overly-fertile imagination can compensate for the monetary restrictions...alas, not the case here.

That imagination goes somewhat awry and travels down many pretentious-lined boulevards...the singing preacher will have you slapping your forehead, the lesbian-infused, mud-wresting scene serves merely to bamboozle. Do we feel anything for the character(s) facing the apocalypse? Not a jot!

The Midwife [Sage Femme]:
Directed by Martin Provost

Basically, this is a two-hander with Catherine Deneuve in the driving seat. The supporting cast needn't have bothered...they bring nothing to the table. All eyes are on Ms Deneuve...alas, not enough camera-time was spent on her.

It's a film that could have been so much more than it is...Monsieur Provost chose to underplay the sentimentality...what it needed was a great big dollop of the stuff...to get the waterworks flowing.

It's a devastatingly sad story of a life led with regrets, let the audience feel those regrets!

Menashe:
Directed by Joshua Z Weinstein

Few films have ever dealt with the Hasidic community...so, this is a welcome insight...what a miserable bunch they are!

Individuality is an absolute no-no...conform or be cast out! So, for poor Menashe - a bit of a bumbler, a bit of a free spirit - life ain't too sweet. 

It's a low-budget film and - in places - it certainly shows...but, Menashe Lustig gives a credible performance that carries the film to its - somewhat - predictable ending. Not the greatest film ever made...but, not bad.

Romans:
Directed by Ludwig Shammasian & Paul Shammasian 

Do not expect the usual catholic-bashing, priest-abusing exposé that we have all become [too] familiar with in recent years...this is so much more...this gets under the skin, into the psyche...of the victim. As for the perpetrator...few words are spoken, none in defence...his self-loathing and the hate you feel for this man-of-the-cloth are spine-chillingly palpable.

Most assuredly, Orlando Bloom has cast off his elven mantle...he delivers a performance of such magnitude and dimension that - at times - your breath will simply be taken away. He makes you feel his...pain!

Everything is assured about this film...the direction, the writing...but, this Mr Bloom's film. A dark, intensely harrowing experience.

Day 12...

England is Mine:
Directed by Mark Gill

The problem is...why make an unauthorised bio-pic in the first place? Without the endorsement of the eponymous [should that be, miserable] man himself...factual accuracy becomes a great big gladioli-waving elephant-in-the-room!

Fans of The Smiths will be bitterly disappointed...not a Smiths tune to be heard! Because...this is about Steven pre-Smiths. And, what a dreary young man he was...no wonder Morrissey didn't endorse...the boy - in the film - is a self-centred, prissy little prick! His depression...Jesus H. Christ...if everyone went into a debilitating downward spiral every time they got rejected for a job, the world would - quite literally - stop spinning. As for his self-proclaimed genius...and, there are those who do think he was/is/will be...well, we'll take a rain-check on that particular assumption! The film proffers no evidence.

It's not a bad film per se...it's just a film that ends where it ought to have begun...it does help if you are a dedicated follower of the eponymous [non-fictional] one! Ooooh you can hear all that idolatry crashing to the floor...incredulity smeared across the faces of the disciples...when they realise Mr Iscariot is alive and [well] making bio-pics...[according to this version of events] Steven pre-Morrissey was a prick who worked for the inland revenue! What a rebel!!!

Treason! Sacrilege! Slaughter the director!

As for the sequel?!? Exits cinema, howling with laughter!

What a way to end a festival...

Sir Ian McKellen on the main Cannes Lions stage with The Brooklyn Brothers and Brown Eyed Boy: Inspiring brands to co-create authentic entertainment with talent and inviting brands to join them re-inventing our heroes

• Sir Ian McKellen appeared at the Cannes Lions festival 2017 for the first time today to encourage and challenge brands to tell more authentic stories, co-create with talent, and ultimately to insert more diversity in their creative communications and join him on a mission to do so
• Talk spear-headed by Jackie Stevenson, Founder of The Brooklyn Brothers, focused on how brands can tell stories with purpose that are entertaining
• Debate ended with a rallying cry to invite brands to shake up Hollywood and entertainment status quo and include more LGBTQ heroes in storylines
• Facebook has already pledged support

Today, The Brooklyn Brothers and Brown Eyed Boy shared the main stage with Sir Ian McKellen, acting legend, at the Lumière Theatre for Cannes Lions 2017.

The session titled “Telling a good story: Ian McKellen with The Brooklyn Brothers”, showcased and discussed Sir Ian’s best loved characters from Hamlet to Sherlock Holmes, from Marvel Comic’s Magneto to Tolkien’s Gandalf and how he’s taken on challenges in work and in life, to tell stories he believes need to be told, both factual and fiction.

Jackie Stevenson, Founding Partner and Global Managing Director of The Brooklyn Brothers sat down with Sir Ian to discuss how he combines creative fulfillment with campaigning around issues close to his heart and staying true to himself. In the second half of the session, Gary Reich, Founder and Managing Director of Production Company Brown Eyed Boy took to the stage sharing his personal stories and collectively, the three identified some lessons and behaviours brands can adopt to help tell stories in culture fit to inspire the next generation.

The session kicked off with an introduction by Jackie Stevenson who set the scene, talking of the current landscape between brands, talent, entertainment and the notion of purpose – subjects at the heart of Brooklyn Brothers creative DNA. The ensuing 45-minute stimulating discussion covered Sir Ian’s incredible career, the key moments in both his professional and personal life, including ‘coming out’ and what his journey taught him about stories well told, exploring lessons he has learned. To start he discussed his acting career, coming out and his work with schools and young people. Key outtakes included:

Entertainment with Purpose: 

• Sir Ian stressed the importance in his life of being true to himself, coming out and choosing characters that inspired, interested and resonated with who he is
• He spoke about how vital it is to look around you and be part of the world and tell stories that ask questions and try and see things from different but nonetheless real perspectives (such as the moral ambiguity of Magneto and the beautiful differences of all the X-men in society)
• Believe in the stories you tell, the writing must be great and the story inspiring and challenging to tell, no matter what you worry an audience may or may not be interested in
• The importance of talking to real young people and to inspire youth, McKellen showing he is himself at all times, giving them permission to be equally as free to explore themselves, without having all the answers
• Resist labels (as children do) and tell stories of people in a fluid way, no-one real fits in a box
• Today will always be yesterday at lightening speed especially for the young, so look forward all the time

The second part of the discussion focused on Sir Ian’s limited experience of brands in his work and why to date the idea of working with them has lacked appeal, as he had not encountered stories told particularly well or that felt authentic.

Talent wants Purpose 

• Putting the story first and the audience profile second, allow people to make their own decisions on what interests them – if a story is inspiring and has a purpose that is what matters 
• Break some rules, challenging convention and authority is okay and interesting if it means true stories are well told and get a platform or voice 
• Stories that ask questions provoke conversations and conversations lead to action

Gary Reich of the Brown Eyed Brown Productions (producers of the world’s first prime time gay sitcom Vicious featuring Sir Ian and Derek Jacobi) then joined the stage. He recounted his own story of sexual awakening and subsequent bullying at school, coupled with the total lack of cultural role models available at that point until he saw Boy George on TV.  This was the start of his own journey to positively impact people through art and culture, the way he had been – by providing stories that helped individuals to feel recognized and valid.

The event culminated with a question to the audience and the broader entertainment world, to think about how much good it would do society and young people to see, relate to and admire more diverse role models in the stories we watch, offering more of a true and real reflection of society. And crucially what if a superhero or action star was gay or trans on screen? Sir Ian’s openness to now be willing to work with brands is part of this bigger question and the need for authentic stories like this to be told with brands as co-creators.

Creativity which is at the heart of the Cannes festival is often acknowledged to thrive from diversity of talent, but Hollywood is still trailing behind here, which gives brands the perfect opportunity to unite with talent and start the shift to create more authentic entertainment themselves.  The rallying cry at the end of the simulating talk was for people to get involved, to join the debate on twitter using the hashtag #LGBTheroes and to crucially invite brands to commission and work as co-creators with the team to make a series of short films re-casting our most loved heroes in a new more diverse light. The first short has the ambition to re-imagine a quintessentially British spy, which has already excitingly got interest from many “A’ list Hollywood LGBT talent. Facebook has already pledged their support to act as a live online premier broadcaster and to promote the film(s) with views. The remaining question is what brands will see this as an important story to tell?

Britain’s LGBT history is the inspiring subject of our fourth Britain on Film on Tour programme. With films spanning 1909 to 1994, it documents a century in which homosexuality went from crime to Pride, via decades of profoundly courageous activism, and the shifting attitudes to LGBT people and their rights across the board throughout a time of explosive social change. 

Including some of the earliest known representations of LGBT people on screen, the collection includes a 1925 film on ‘Cutie Cattaro’, a boxer more interested in flirting than fighting and a drag queen, ‘Percy’ competing for a prize in 1909. Exploring the struggles and identity politics of the ‘80s and ‘90s, the films cover early AIDS victims recounting their painful experiences; the formation of the Gay Black Group, an early instance of intersectional thinking; and the 1980 fight for transgender rights in the European Court.

It’s a moving and fascinating collection, a social document encompassing both the collective public fight for basic rights and equality and more personal, intimate and psychological ones: the shedding of shame and the ability to be open about one’s most private self; the claiming of the right to love and to say publicly, proudly: this is who I am.

Channel 4 is marking the 50^th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality with a new season of programmes: 50 Shades of Gay. Random Acts

Channel 4's dedicated short arts strand Random Acts is partnering with Tate on its Queer British Art 1861-1967 exhibition, which marks the 50th anniversary since the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in the UK. The six shorts, which will be directed by contemporary LGBTQ directors, will explore queer identity and will be shown in the exhibition at Tate Britain from April to October, and on Channel 4 as part of its LGBTQ programming.

In Britain’s Great Gay Buildings, presented by Stephen Fry, 7 famous gay faces champion the buildings that have helped define Britain’s gay history, revealing the groundbreaking events that happened in them and extraordinary people who lived and worked in them . The Reverend Richard Cole revisits Heaven Nightclub after many years to reveal its hedonistic past, Mary Portas visits Shibden Hall in Yorkshire to discover the secret diaries of a Yorkshire heiress, Craig Revel Horwood revels in the story of Britain’s drag scene at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Simon Callow tells the story of Oscar Wilde’s downfall at the Old Bailey, Rikki Beadle Blair visits the Theatre Royal Haymarket to discover how the British public showed their support for Sir John Gielgud after his arrest for cottaging, Liz Carr travels to Bletchley Park to visit the place that fostered one of Britain’s greatest scientists Alan Turing and Lord Waheed Alli tells the story of the Houses of Parliament’s recent battle for gay rights.

Hark...the angels are not singing...Netflix cancels its most ambitious series to date...with a paltry excuse!

“After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end. Now, notoriously, Netflix refuses to publish its viewing figures...with each episode of Sense8 costing an alleged $9 million dollars...it doesn't take a genius to figure out the real reason behind the cancellation!

Not enough people watched it!!!

Over 450,000 people have signed an on-line petition against the Netflix executives' decision...wow, that'll make a difference! But, you never know...it just might!

If we may offer a suggestion...scale it down, get rid of the weaker performances/storylines...cull the cluster!

And, to everyone out there...if you don't support LGBT TV shows, they get cancelled just like non-LGBT shows! That's life...it's a business!

It's that time of the year when GLAAD releases its Studio Responsibility Index...

Sadly, for us...that means we have to trawl through the dross that Hollywood produces...(with the odd exception)...as we sit back, reluctantly ready to watch the likes of...

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Dirty Grandpa, Zoolander 2...

...we ask ourselves: Why bother? GLAAD: why bother with this unnecessary report? Especially in the year that a 'gay' film 'won' the Oscar for best picture!

Redundancy...is a word that springs to mind!

Overview of Findings...

• Of the 125 film releases GLAAD counted from the major studios in 2016, 23 (18.4%) contained characters identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. This is an increase of nearly one percentage point from the 17.5% of films (22 of 126) found to be inclusive in 2015.
  
  
• Gay men continue to be the most represented by a significant margin with 83% of the inclusive films featuring gay male characters. This is an increase of six percentage points from the previous report (77%). Representation of lesbian characters is up with 35% of inclusive films including lesbians, a significant increase of 12 percentage points from the year before. There was also an increase in bisexual representation: 13% of major studios’ inclusive films counted bi characters compared to 9% in last year’s report. GLAAD counted one transgender-inclusive film (Paramount’s Zoolander 2), similar to the previous report.
  
  
• GLAAD tallied 70 LGBTQ characters among all mainstream releases in 2016, up from 47 in 2015. It is important to note that 14 of these characters were part of a single musical number in Universal Pictures’ PopStar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which misleadingly inflated the numbers. Male characters again vastly outnumbered females by two to one (47 to 22), compared to 36 men and 11 women in 2015’s major studio releases. One character (All, Paramount’s Zoolander 2) was counted as non-binary.
  
  
• The racial diversity of LGBTQ characters again decreased in films tracked in 2016 after another dramatic drop the year before. In 2016, only 20% were people of color, compared to 25.5% the year before and 32.1% in films released in 2014. Of the 70 LGBTQ characters counted, 48 were white (69%), nine were Black/African American (13%), one was Latinx (1%), and four were Asian/Pacific Islander (6%). Eight characters (11%) were non-human (Disney’s Zootopia, Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie and Sausage Party).
  As has been the case each year since GLAAD began this report, comedies remain the most likely major studio films to be LGBTQ-inclusive. Of the 125 films tracked, GLAAD identified 39 films as comedies, of which 12 (31%) were inclusive. By comparison, GLAAD counted 44 films as genre films (action, sci-fi, fantasy/horror), of which six (14%) films were inclusive. Additionally, two of 27 dramas (7%), and three of 15 animated/family films (20%) included LGBTQ characters. GLAAD did not count any documentaries from the major studios in 2016.
  

  

• Paramount and Universal Pictures tied as the most inclusive major studios tracked in this year’s report. Five of Paramount’s 15 films (33%) were LGBTQ-inclusive, and Universal’s five of 17 total films equates to 29%. Warner Brothers is next with four of 19 films (21%), followed by 20^th Century Fox at three of 16 films (19%), and Lionsgate with three of 24 films (13%). Two of Sony’s 21 films were inclusive (10%), and Disney rounds out the group with one of 13 (8%). In last year’s reporting, both Paramount and Disney were found to completely exclude LGBTQ characters from their slates.
