CGiii Comment

A chance encounter between two creative women results in a fruitful collaboration. The Rest I Make Up is a fascinating film about a unique playwright and the disease that threatens to silence her.

Cuban-American experimental playwright Maria Irene Fornes has influenced many contemporary playwrights including Edward Albee and Caryl Churchill, yet her own work is not well known. In 2003 she had stopped writing due to Alzheimer’s but when she met Michelle Memran the two found inspiration in each other as Memran began to document Fornes’s life and the dementia that had halted her work. From New York to Havana Memran’s camera illustrates Fornes’s exuberance in the face of memory loss while explaining the important place she holds in American theatre history.

The Rest I Make Up is a loving portrait of a creative woman who remains vibrant, funny, and alive in the face of disappearing memories.
