CGiii Comment

Six filmmakers come together for a cinematic tribute to the transcendent music, queer activism, and vibrant spirituality of African American composer, performer, and activist Julius Eastman (1940–1990). Originally a classically trained pianist, Eastman became a central figure in New York's experimental music scene in the late 1970s. His music is known for its slow, cumulative structure, often bearing politically charged titles such as Evil N***** or Gay Guerrilla, marking both a radical compositional stance and an uncompromising political gesture. As a Black queer man navigating the structural erasures of both classical and avant-garde music, Eastman used sound to carve out a future where dignity meets resistance, leaving behind a powerful yet shadowed legacy.

JOY BOY, a tribute to Julius Eastman is not a biography, but a constellation of filmic, choreographic, and sonic expressions inspired by Eastman's life and work. Unfolding through four chapters and three interludes, the film is threaded with a layered montage of Eastman's voice - connecting each part and echoing his visionary presence.
