CGiii Comment

Where do you go after The Young Pope?!? To La-La Land...that's where!

Paolo Sorrentino & Co. have gone off-piste...into a vortex of outrageous camp and religious neon-lit absurdity. It's hilarious, terrifying, touching and - at times - truly surreal.

Here, John Malkovitch dons the papal ferula...embellished by eyeliner, a few mental health issues and a serious drug habit. Riddled with affectations and eloquence, his mission is to 'upgrade' his inherited institution...allowing gay marriage, allowing priests to marry...metaphorically and cataclysmically, dropping a bomb on the Vatican and its preposterous piety. The question is: Will he succeed? Not if Cardinal Angelo Voiello has anything to do with it! Yes, there is a god, Silvio Orlando returns [in duplicate]...this man does contempt and comfort with eye-blinking ease. Prepare for a duel of minds...with flurries of flicks, fleches and feints.

This is haute couture irreverence, this is malignant beauty. This is a statement.

The(ir) Blurb...

Follow-up series to Paolo Sorrentino's 'The Young Pope.'

Under the papacy of Sir John Brannox under the name of John Paul III, Vatican tries to clean its good name after a series of sexual scandals that jeopardized the institution itself. But an unexpected trouble threatens John Paul III when Lenny Belardo, the previous Pope Pius XIII who was in a coma from nine months ago after to suffer a heart attack while he was celebrating a mass, wakes up to claim his place as the legitimate Pope of Rome. The news about Pius XIII's comeback shocks the Christianity, turning the admiration of millions of believers in true idolatry for the returned Pope. Given the unusual situation of two Popes in the Vatican at the same time, it unleashes an inner war between Pius XII and John Paul III, the first to recover his power, and the second to keep it.
