Here we go again!
Well, they really ought not to have bothered. All we can really say about this - disaster - is: Bring back Phyllida Lloyd and Catherine Johnson!
Because...Ol Parker was not fit for purpose, neither as director nor screenwriter. To be fair, few people behind the camera were fit for purpose...that includes the casting director, the wardrobe department, the editor...and, as for continuity...well, let's just say that position remained unfilled throughout the shoot!
This debacle is more of a prequel than a sequel...there are younger versions of all the main characters...in what can only be called the miscasting of the century. Apart from Lily James' promiscuous Donna, all were blithering, charmless caricatures of their older counterparts.
Obviously, this film's USP was Cher...and, the Abba songs. Well, you have to wait for Cher, she pops in at the end, delivers a few bitchy lines and sings an out-of-place and rather convoluted Fernando. The rest of the songs are a curious mixture of B-sides and snippets. Yes, there are the big songs...but, they get lost in the manufactured story. The Super Trouper finale, as entertaining as it is, really does not fit into the structure whatsoever.
No surprises, it made a fortune at the Box Office. But...as far as sequels/prequels go...this is down there with the worst of them!
