A hilarious and touching look at the three middle-aged bears who, while working in Hollywood, decided to self-produce their own web series in the vein of THE GOLDEN GIRLS mixed with some MURDER, SHE WROTE, which became one of the most successful web shows of all-time: WHERE THE BEARS ARE. This documentary explores the problems the writers had trying to get gay-themed shows on the air even after significant Hollywood success. Their focus on the bear community resulted from noticing its lack of representation in films and TV series.

Getting the show off the ground with a Kickstarter campaign, the writers chose to explore what real masculinity is and isn’t while considering body issues and depictions of sex. The improbable success of the hit comedy web series WHERE THE BEARS ARE is chronicled in the story of three middle-aged show business veterans, frustrated with the ageist conservative film industry, who take matters into their own hands by self-producing a campy murder mystery for YouTube. Featuring interviews with the creators and some of its actors, A BIG, GAY HAIRY HIT! WHERE THE BEARS ARE insightfully addresses body-shaming and sex-positivity while tracking the sensational online success of the series, capturing the many decisions (and antics) from behind-the-scenes.

A warm, fuzzy, and refreshingly entertaining documentary about friends and the creative process, capturing the same chemistry that helped propel the show to popularity - a “must-see” movie of the year (even if you’ve never binge-watched all seven seasons.)
