CGiii Comment

Described - by many - as darkly comedic...well, it's certainly dark. Off-the-rails dark!!!

It's a simple enough story...a mother wants justice for her murdered daughter. But, hey, life's not so simple. Human beings are involved...and, humans, in a tight-knit community are more unpredictable than a meth-addicted, machete-wielding pyromaniac. Not that there is a meth-addicted, machete-wielding pyromaniac in this little town...but, as good as!!!

A town where idiosyncrasies evolve beyond the peculiar and drift into the abnormal. Sam Rockwell has been given a gift of a role. As Officer Jason Dixon, he is evil - there's no other suitable word - evil fits perfectly. A character who will make your blood boil with [nearly] every appearance. A mama's boy with a frustrated, toxic heart!

Then, there's Frances McDormand as steely-faced Mildred Hayes...a mother scorched by life, by men, by regrets. Single-minded, hell-bent...she is relentless and ruthless, she will get what she wants...at any cost! A stubborn, solid, heartbroken mama with nothing to lose.

Martin McDonagh has written two great arching characters...and, thankfully, allowed his actors to play the hell out of them...as they mingle knee-deep in subplots and eccentrics. But, the revenge and the ambition - that these two crave - are never out of reach. It's the unpredictability of the film that gives it such strength.

It's never comfortable to watch...there's always that underlying rage. This is a film that snaps, boils, broods and festers. It is an experience not to be missed!
