The [erotic] fan-fiction subculture is a rather bemusing place and - most definitely - not a place for everyone...it's kind of geeky and just a little bit weird...for those with such an inclination, their heroes and villains become what the want them to be, do what they want them to do...for example, Harry Potter gobbles a horny schoolboy dressed as a ravenous gnome with an enormous magical schlong! Harry Potter, who would have thought!
Anything is possible in this world of make believe...for the more mature participants, it seems futile telling them to grow up and get a life...they need intense therapy, urgently. As for the kiddies...well, they'll eventually grow out of it...and, if they don't...refer to the previous sentence.
Perhaps, it's time for some parents to worry...when their kid disappears upstairs to read a comic! Sticky pages!
Tut tut...
Who are we to comment on or criticise this particular subculture...each to their own, that's what we say. They say it's harmless, creative [we say, unoriginal], titillating fun...but, it is a tiny bit worrying...basically, these kids (and adults - who really should know better) are writing 'anything-goes' porn...with light sabres and luminous lycra.
Okay...you get the idea...we don't wholly buy into the whole fan-fiction thing...but, Slash allows us a peek into this world of geeks, eccentrics and goofballs.
If you are comic-devouring, hormone-infused cosplayer, you'll love it. But, if you prefer your porn the good old-fashioned way...via the internet, as we do...then...
...wait for it...wait...hold onto your gruffaloes...what a quirky little delight Slash proves to be.
Yes...it could have gone pear-shaped and bombed considering the subject-matter...but, thanks, to some rather inspired casting, deft writing and a sensitive directorial touch. Slash works like a charm.
It's all Ying + Yang with Neil and Julia...as opposites, they fit...two perfectly pitched performances. Bright futures beckon.
Slash covers the entire emotional gamut...it will befuddle, you will smile, laugh and - if you are not a hard-hearted, drearily-dressed cynic - a tear or two may well-up in your eye.
Yes...dear geeks, eccentrics and goofballs...thank you for making this world a little more colourful. And to you, Clay Liford...thank you...for your film. Obviously, a labour of love.
