Kavafis

Country: Greece, Language: Greek, 85 mins

  • Director: Yannis Smaragdis
  • Writer: Dimitris Katalifos; Dimitris Nollas
  • Producer: Eleni Smaragdi

CGiii Comment

An elegant film about an unattractive man - who is not particularly chatty - but, a writer of historical and erotic poetry.

Kavafis was barely recognised during his lifetime...rejected by the Greek literary establishment.

The problems with the film are immense...Kavafis utters practically nothing throughout, preferring to lurk in dark places and stare laboriously at a plethora of young men...who, without the enticement of money, wouldn't have given him a second glance.

For those that know nothing about his life and poetry, this film will not improve on that lack of knowledge...it exclusively deals with his homosexuality and his erotic poetry. Kavafis offered so much more than this one-dimensional portrait.

It looks good, it sounds good - but, sadly, it is terminally boring.
