CGiii Comment

Rome & Juliet in an all-male, American Military Academy...why?

A play that has been done to death...so, has Brown brought anything new to the table?

No...but, he does a hatchet-job with the story...preserving gender (Juliet has lovely pecs), inserting a perplexingly incongruous YouTube video-thing and, mutilating the end...again, why?

Basically, this is a showcase for some pretty and fairly good actors...desperately proving that they are Shakespeare competent, desperately proving that they can act...that old hard nut, Shakespearean endorsement...a must for any serious director and actor alike.

A dangerous pursuit because, more often than not, it fails to take the audience along with it - as is the case here.

Brave but misguided.

The(ir) Blurb...

When eight cadets are left behind at an isolated military high school, the greatest romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom and permeates their lives. Incorporating the original text of 'Romeo and Juliet,' YouTube videos, and lip-synced Indie rock music, Private Romeo takes us to a mysterious and tender place that only Shakespeare could have inspired.
