It's a more sanitised [and expensive] version of its British counterpart - and, definitely, played for laughs rather than exposing the predilections of white trash.
There are less cringeworthy moments and the acting is better.
The production values are far superior which makes it a more pleasant viewing experience - but, that's not the original point - it is meant to be unpleasant.

Watch the Irish American family the Gallagher's deal with their alcoholic father Frank. Fiona, the eldest daughter, takes the role of parent to her five brothers and sisters. Lip, Ian, Debbie, Carl, and Liam (half white & half black) deal with life in the South Side projects of Chicago. Fiona balances her sex life and raising her siblings.
