C4 to examine trans and gender diverse children in trio of docs...

Channel 4 Education has commissioned a season of three documentaries from Firecracker Films that will explore the complex world of gender dysphoria and diversity in young people. The three films will focus on young people in the US and UK.

Young And Trans (wt) will follow families in Britain as they navigate the world of childhood gender dysphoria and diversity, while contemplating the universal parenting dilemma of “what is best for my child?”. The documentary will follow the families as they share their situation with friends, and get to meet other families going through the same thing. Though many parents keep their experiences hidden, shying away from society’s judgement, this film will sensitively delve into this misunderstood world.

The Camp (wt) will follow a number of ordinary American families as they come together for a summer camp for trans and gender diverse 4 to 12 year olds held in the USA. These young people and their families will contemplate the next steps from counselling through to medical puberty blockers. The Camp (wt) will offer insight into the ever changing lives of these courageous families.

Channel 4 Education also previously announced The Testosterone Diaries (wt) which will follow a group of young trans men - who were assigned female at birth. Across the UK these young people are proudly broadcasting their lives to the world in online diaries. Combining present tense personal stories with candid web diaries, the programme will show their incredible “rebirth” alongside the emotional challenges presented by their families, friends and society, and find out why they are publishing their journeys online.

Testosterone Diaries (wt) was commissioned by Channel 4 Education commissioning editor Bec Milligan (maternity leave) and was overseen by Emily Jones. Young and Trans (wt) and The Camp (wt) were commissioned by Emily Jones. They will be produced by Firecracker Films with executive producers Tom Barry and Jes Wilkins and series director Nick Sweeney. Young and Trans (wt), The Camp (wt) and The Testosterone Diaries (wt) will all air on Channel 4 in 2015.
