CGiii Comment
Robin Williams does...timid...sadly, in one of his final roles.
Those late autumnal years can certainly make you reflect...upon, what could have been?!
A not-so regretful life led in disguise, rather than lies...when time is visibly running out...it's a case of...now or never.
Boulevard is a slow-paced examination of the now rather than the never...rationality and obedience are thrown to the wind. Caution is untethered and - rather than grabbing the bull by the horns - a young buck is contained and cornered by cash...and, 'kindness'. At last...satisfaction.
The film avoids comment on the nature of the now...in real terms, this is pederasty...this is exploitation. Elderly man, young rent-boy...scarily stating, everything has its price...if you are willing to pay.
Yet, the gentility of the film and Williams' performance mask the ugly truth...it somewhat camouflages the reality...there are no torrid sex scenes, this elderly gentleman wants a different kind of intimacy, the rent-boy only knows what he knows and it involves hard card and harder sex.
A symbiosis develops...which is continually threatened by the pimp, the wife (who delivers one killer line) and the mundane. It really is...now or never.
Perhaps, to its detriment, the film is a little too restrained...preferring the pensive to the passion. But...what happens when the passion dies - and no matter what people say - it always does...coming out of the closet in later life is something that few really know anything about - bar the few who actually do it...this is just one perspective. One scenario.
It's gentle, it's polite...with the glimmer of an uncomfortable darkside.
Admirable work.
