There was the documentary...
Now...there is a West End show...
And soon...there's going to be a feature film!
What 'Jamie New' should not do is appear on novelty/reality shows like Eating with My Ex - not exactly an appearance everybody is talking about...he did himself no favours whatsoever!
Back to the stage show...this is the live broadcast of...
It's the West End, expectations are running high, the reviews rave...is it everything you would expect and - really - is everybody talking about Jamie?
The word 'disappointing' comes immediately to mind. The staging is what you would expect from a low-budget provincial production. Hello...this is the West End! The same can be said for the direction. The writing staggers from PC-preachy to pedestrian cliché...lacking [wholly] in sparkle and originality...there are just too many extinct 'jokes' delivered...groan!
The songs...well, apart from [maybe] one, you won't be hearing any of these being belted out in your local karaoke bar! Jamie is not The Greatest Showman...by any stretch of the imagination.
The Drag Queens...all do rather dismal and lacklustre impersonations...of a drag queen. But...with the [dreadful] material they were given, they did what they could to the best of their abilities! As do the most of the cast...
As for [the-world-revolves-around] Jamie, the me me me me me thing really does get on your tits after a while. If it's going to be about him him him him...make 'him' a little less whiny and a bit more likeable.
For the sheer enthusiasm of the [mostly] young cast and for the positive message it delivers...it is worth watching...
Perhaps, this is a show that has to be seen 'live' to be embroiled up into the atmosphere - sadly, in this format, it does not transfer [to the big screen] well.
So...for the upcoming movie, get 'real' drag queens, scrap the old jokes, re-write the script, get new songs, cut the irritating narcissism...and all will be peachy!
