It's a shame that this film didn't receive the attention it deserved.
Connelly delivers a fine performance - teetering perfectly between the tragic and comedic.
Black has delivered a fine looking picture with a story that is less about dysfunction and more about the vagaries of life - in all of its parochial splendor.
Mormonism is an easy target - be it a movement, a cult or, a religion - it is ridiculed in the way that every religion can be ridiculed...when it comes to sex and love - religious doctrine is pushed onto the back burner.
Virginia is not only a love story...as unconventional as it is - it asks that mad question: to what limits would you go for your child? Its answer is definitive.
Lovely is a strange word to use - but, it is a lovely film.

Virginia is a charming, yet mentally ill mother whose greatest love is her protector and illegitimate son, Emmett. But her longest love belongs to the local-married-Mormon Sheriff, who is running for public office and might very well be Emmett's father.
