CGiii Comment

Shot entirely on smartphones and set against the backdrop of the conservative backlash to France’s 2012 bill to legalize same-sex marriage, Aria is about individual voices accompanying one another to convey the complicated melody of LGBTQ parenthood. Beginning with poetic detachment – the alarm clocks and track squeals of a life lived for procreation, the radio blather and homophobic protests of the vocally small-minded, the blood drops of a miscarriage – the film emerges into an intimate series of portraits that personalize the political. Interviewees across the spectrum of age and gender lean over the director’s belly and speak their truths about such issues as their desire (or lack thereof) to become a parent, adoption, fertility issues, and the Kafkaesque bureaucracy of insemination. What emerges is so much more powerful than the screams of a crowd. It’s the multivalent voice of understanding. – Michael Belcher
