CGiii Comment

The Minnesota Roller Girls defy gender stereotypes and advocate for body positivity. Unlike the customary portrayal of “Derby Girls” in sexy attire, vying for the cheers and approval of male fans, this team of mighty women take pride in their athleticism and are breaking barriers in the rough-and-tumble sport of roller derby. Minnesota Mean follows these women for a year, looking at the challenges they face and the relationships they forge as they endeavor to win the top prize in Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby, the Hydra.

Sprinkled throughout the film are interviews with many of the key players that offer substance, commentary, and perspective on a lesser-known sport. “Smoka Hontas,” “Diamond Rough,” “Shiver Me Kimbers,” and “Hurtrude Stein” are a few of the many colorful and talented characters that show what dedication, team spirit, and camaraderie really mean. When a key player gets injured, the girls prove their commitment to the team and each other. This compelling, inspirational, and highly entertaining film is a proud display of the power of women, united in sport.
