Bill Douglas - My Best Friend

Country: United Kingdom, Language: English, 77 mins

  • Director: Jack Archer

CGiii Comment

There have been more films made about Bill Douglas than Bill Douglas made himself! Why all the interest in this relatively unknown/forgotten filmmaker?

That's the question that this film does not answer. Rather, Lynne Ramsay and Lenny Abrahamson [directors of fairly inaccessible films] pontificate and extol - falling on deaf ears to those not-in-the-know!

Prepare yourselves! Your Gaydar will be setting off alarm bells when Peter Jewell states that his friend and constant companion - Bill Douglas - was not homosexual whatsoever! Difficult to believe when you hear his affected accent - a far cry from the poverty-stricken, Scottish mining town where he was born and raised.

Faux aristocratic, latent and ridiculously over-hyped. So much was left unsaid, old-school loyalties don't make a good film.

Why this was even considered for the Queer Lion award will remain a mystery!
