The film opens on the protagonist, Alex, and his sister Becca playing a board game. They become tired of this type of play and Becca suggests that play "dress up" instead. She introduces Alex to this game and they ponder her different outfits together. He finds a dress that he prefers and he puts it on. He enjoys the game and feels quite comfortable in the dress that he is wearing.
Alex and Becca go on to have a tea party in their dress where they use their imagination. The next day Alex locks himself in the bathroom and is admiring himself in the dress that he had worn the day before while playing with his sister. His father, Paul, knocks on the door informing Alex that it is time to go over to his friend Eric's house. Alex is startled and takes off his dress as quickly as possible and stuffs it in his backpack before exiting the bathroom. Paul takes Alex over to Eric's house. Alex goes off with Eric to play upon their arrival. Eric sees that Alex had brought a backpack and he starts to question Alex about it. Alex is reluctant to share the contents of the backpack with his friend.
It becomes apparent to Alex that Eric will not let him go without showing him the contents of the bag. Alex exits the room and reenters Eric's room wearing the dress that he had chosen with his sister the day before. Eric rejects this and starts to bully Alex ending with him pushing him to the ground. Paul picks Alex up from Eric's house and they drive home. Paul doesn't know what to say to Alex for fear of making Alex feel worst. Paul calls Alex down to dinner and Alex sees that his dad is wearing one of his mother's old dresses. This makes Alex happy and he runs back upstairs to put his dress on as well. The family enjoys dinner together wearing dresses.
