CGiii Comment

"Giò Stajano's secret for going at life in the best way (or the worst way, depending on your point of view) has been and still is never to be taken too seriously. Just the fact that he was born gay in a little town in the deep South at the apex of Fascism, and even more that he came into the Starace family, that he chose as his mother the unknowing daughter of a 'virileissimo' right hand man of the Duce, in whose arms he peed at the tender age of one all this says a lot. Then, in the fifties, a youth of good prospects, he lands in Rome with his anticonformist lifestyle and with his book, Roma capovolta, about Capitoline homosexuality in high places (immediately confiscated). He becomes a character and is called by Fellini to play himself in La dolce vita. Then, all of a sudden, in 1981, after having worked as an 'assault-journalist', after having continued to write books and play movie roles, he got tired of this role, flew to Casablanca, and became Maria Gioacchina. In this way he came through on his inborn bent towards provocation and mockery in the face of life and of himherself." (Ottavio Mai and Giovanni Minerba)

Documentario dedicato a Giò Stajano, nata Gioacchino Stajano Starace.
