Coming out as gay is never easy, but living authentically may cost Bryan Ruby his current job in baseball and a future career in country music. Trapped by choice within two visibly homophobic industries, he surveys the inner conflicts erupting from personal denials in a closeted life. Hearing daily catcalls to other players of "faggot" and "gay" constantly reminds this ballplayer that he's neither accepted nor respected. Remaining silent and "passing" as straight, Bryan comes to realize, only legitimizes this homophobic culture. Finally, Bryan comes to realize that suffering in silence is not a personal triumph, but a public tragedy, making it even harder for all LGBTQ. Bryan Ruby takes a brave first step for himself and for those who follow, coming out as the only active openly-gay pro baseball player in America..

"I kept thinking about the little 14-year-old me, who was scared because I'm a baseball player who loved country music," Ruby, 25, told USA TODAY Sports. "Those are worlds where people like me are told they can't belong. I'm not a hot-shot prospect. But today, you can't find a single active baseball player who is out publicly. I want to help create a world where future generations of baseball players don't have to sacrifice authenticity or who they really are to play the game they love." For Bryan Ruby there is only one path - it's not smooth, and it's not simple - but it will always be authentic.
