CGiii Comment

Considering all the VR projects out there...ranging from the downright amateur to the wonderfully complex, this offering - through the route we took - is angry, almost to the point of alienating.

Because it's VR, it really needs to be experienced in the arena it was designed for...but, it is sluggish, repetitive...and, angry.

This interactive archive of Black trans existence poses existential questions around collective memory and self-expression, through digital media.

‘Throughout history, Black queer and trans people have been erased from the archives. Because of this, it is necessary not only to archive our existence, but also the many creative narratives we have used (…) and to share our experiences.’ Working at the intersection of gender, race and collective memory, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley utilises new media techniques to create thought-provoking projects about Black trans existence and legacy. Her interactive Black trans archive (presented at BFI Flare in an updated version) poses existential questions of collective memory and self-expression through digital media.
