CGiii Comment

It's not easy going from stage to screen...many have attempted that massive leap and many have failed.

Adam can't be viewed as a successful transition [to the screen] nor can it be hailed as a failure, the directors decided to film it as it was, in situ, in a theatre...the power of a live show diminishes exponentially when the cameras start to roll. What is needed is a dynamic imagination that replaces the electricity of the live performance...alas, these first-time film directors kept in firmly in the medium they know!

That's the negative...now, for the positive...Adam Kashmiry. A blistering performance, he certainly does his best with the restrictions the directors/producers imposed upon him and this production...he gives it the wings this material so richly deserves!

The cinematography and lighting are impressive throughout...but, when you see the impact of the mutli-media and the music has on the production as a whole...it could have/should have been breath-taking.

Obviously, there were financial restraints to contend with...but, imagination should transcend restrictions. Everything was already in place, the directors just needed to know what their money shots were...and then, exploit them.

Still...a powerful piece that certainly does well to promote the theatrical production. And...it could be a pitch film for a major feature...the material is all there!

The(ir) Blurb...

Inspired by the life of Adam Kashmiry, Adam tells the remarkable story of a young trans man and his struggle across genders and borders to be himself. Originally a multi-award-winning stage play, Adam has been reinvented as a compelling, theatrical on-screen drama, presented by the National Theatre of Scotland and Hopscotch Films. Adam Kashmiry performs, as himself, in the leading role.
