CGiii Comment

A great dis-service has been done to this film...

The marketing, the packaging, the title, the trailer...all atrocious.

Going by the book-cover alone...this comes across as a shmaltzy, Hallmark-infused, cheesy Christmas gumbo.

It is not.

Billed as a comedy...

It is not.

Fragile people, brittle situations...the camera weaves itself into the fabric of many stories. Percy the policeman...well, he'll touch a nerve. Charlie's first love...will make you reminisce and smile and grimace...

Steve Martin's voice-over sets the tone...perfectly. This is tender, this is gentle...with the abrasive presence of warts, pimples and scars.

You will recognise yourself (or, at least, someone you hold dear) somewhere in the milieu...and, a tear or two may tumble from your eye.

It's a lovely, lovely film.

The(ir) Blurb...

When four generations of the Cooper clan come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday.

GLAAD

This ensemble drama about a family learning the true meaning of Christmas includes uptight police officer Percy who says he is “only gay in bed.” He later explains that the reason he is so strictly rule abiding – and by implication the reason he remains closeted – is that his mother forced him to behave in traditionally masculine ways as a child. Percy exists solely to further lead character Emma’s story arc by encouraging her to act as the person she would like to become, and never gets any resolution of his own.

Well...thank you GLAAD for drawing our attention to this sleeping beauty.

We have to disagree with your analysis of Percy...he exists for HIS story!
