CGiii Comment

The only thing more beautiful than a depleted congregation is no congregation...at all.

Sexual consent, contradiction and celibacy...all the usual ecclesiastical themes are explored and, with some added bonuses...alcoholism, recurrent dalliances and wayward wives...the toxicity of the situation is muted through skill, composition and composure. For this is a beautifully structured film, it is a work of art...there are a couple of scenes that don't make any sense: the animal impressions in the maize field and the rock 'n' roll funeral parade!!!

The church is alive and well in eastern Europe - film can be a powerful instrument in dismantling this evil edifice...however, this is not an open and shut case as to where the director or this film stands - for or against...

She keeps you guessing right up to the last frame...in just one brief shot, and it is the absolute making of the film, she manages to simplistically show how profoundly sinister this institution actually is...nothing short of genius.

The(ir) Blurb...

Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with teenagers with behavioral problems who fight and yell abuse. He declines the advances of a young brunette named Ewa; saying he is already spoken for. However; celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection. Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Dynia; the strange and taciturn son of a simple rural family; Adam's self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.
