Jim Loves Jack: The James Egan Story (1995) is the story of two men who met and fell in love in 1948 in Toronto, and would spend the rest of their lives together. Angered by the lurid headlines in the tabloid newspapers about gay men being arrested by the police, James Egan began to write letters to the editor challenging their stereotyped depictions of homosexuals, and became the first public gay rights activist in Canada in the 1950s and early 1960s. Twenty years later, Jim and his partner, Jack Nesbitt would launch a landmark Supreme Court challenge against the federal government demanding equal recognition for same-sex spouses. In this excerpt, Jim and Jack tell how they met, and we learn about the beginnings of Jim's activism.
