Rocco and His Brothers

CGiii Comment

The divisions, prejudices and discrimination between north and south Italy.

Visconti revisits and produces one of the crown jewels of Italian neo-realism - with all the characteristics that go with such a moniker...bad and/or exaggerated acting, ridiculous dubbing...the mundane, the poverty and desperation.

It's all about money and the demands and constant complaints of an over-bearing mother...and, the dreary conflict between good brother and bad brother.

The subtext is as clear as you want it to be - depending upon your gay sensibility.

However, the mere length of the film fails to sustain interest in an otherwise dull and familiar story.
