Barcelona at its bleakest.

Bardem's immaculate performance saves the film from an unrelenting despair - devoid of dignity and humanity where shreds of decency manage to slip through the void.

There are moments of utter genius and heartbreak.

Inarritu took 14 months to edit the film - he should have edited less, took more out and it may have been a masterpiece - difficult viewing.
