Lupe

Country: USA, Language: English, 60 mins

  • Director: José Rodriguez-Soltero
  • Producer: José Rodriguez-Soltero

CGiii Comment

As you would expect from the Andy Warhol stable of film-making...very little talent was used and/or available in the making this film.

José Rodriguez-Soltero - wisely - gave up film-making in 1968.

The(ir) Blurb...

A neglected underground classic, only digitised from 16mm last year, charts the multi-faceted life of Mexican actress Lupe Vélez. Puerto Rican director Soltero was a significant part of the New York underground film movement and of creating new queer aesthetics that influenced later and better known film directors. Here Lupe’s times of sex work, Hollywood stardom, crushing romance, suicide and ascension to the spirit world are portrayed in a gorgeous colour saturated dime-store baroque. All accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack that includes Cuban boleros, the Supremes, Vivaldi, Elvis and Spanish flamenco.
