Birthing

Country: Israel, 4 mins

  • Director: Michael Ben Abu

CGiii Comment

BIRTHING Michael casts into the sea in a purification and immersion ceremony. The personal memory boxes are labeled 'Forgotten childhood?' and 'It's not me, Michael.' Cyclical stream of consciousness memory associated with farewell and life and death lead to a rebirthing and farewell to childhood. In an action evoking the Jewish New Year's Tashlikh ritual of symbolically casting sins into the sea as well as worldwide immersion rituals, the artist's immersion and disappearance into water -- the source of life - is a rectification, transformation, and spiritual healing.
