CGiii Comment
"Whatever happened to Helmut Berger?" wonders Bettina Vorndamme, remembering the actor who was her cinema hero when she was young. The results of her Google search are shocking: outrageous behaviour, reality show appearances and alcoholism. The actor from The Damned (1969) and Ludwig (1973), once considered "the most handsome man in the world", seems now to be the ghost of his former self. Bettina Vorndamme decides to put an end to his slow decline, driven by the idea that only a decent job can save Berger. She contacts Berger in Salzburg with the help of her daughter Valesca. Shortly afterwards, the iconic German actor is sitting on her living room couch, sipping coffee out of one of the grandmother's precious cups. This strange couple establishes a deep friendship, though with many ups and downs. Finally, the Berliner Volksbühne offers Helmut an acting job: he makes his debut in theatre at the age of 73.
