A veritable feast for the eyes...but, is it a necessary re-make?
Well, yes and no...no, if you have seen Visconti's re-telling of the events 40 years prior. Yes, if you haven't seen the aforementioned...
Ludwig - a king not fit for purpose - and his follies are pretty well documented...alas, neither film presents any new - jaw-dropping - surprises.
However, this version of events is sadly lacking in substance...more than halfway through, it jumps 14 years and changes the lead actor...as if nothing had happened in the interim - lazy and infuriating...doing irrevocable damage to the film as a whole.
€16 million...for an inferior - yet beautiful - re-make....as fanciful as one of Ludwig's schemes, only this will not recoup its costs over time...as Ludwig's castles did.

The(ir) Blurb...
A dramatic retelling of the life of Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, one of the most fascinating monarchs of modern times. From his accession to the throne at the age of 18 to his passionate support of Richard Wagner and his music. From his ingenuous political commitment to his obsessive construction of extravagant palaces and to his gradual withdrawal into a lonely dream world, an epic narrative of breathtaking grandeur.
