Lupe is the complex story of Rafael, a Cuban immigrant and boxer struggling with their transgender identity while searching for their missing sister, Isabelle, in New York City's underground sex industry. The unexpected appearance of a childhood confidant helps with the search, and a newfound friend provides much-needed emotional support in helping Rafael find their footing as a trans person in unfamiliar and unforgiving new environs. In an effort to present an authentic portrayal of the transgender community, the directors worked closely with supporting performer Celia Harrison and associate producer Kerry Michelle O'Brien, who both identify as transgender.
