CGiii Comment
Nico is a surreal drama that follows a recently transitioned trans man throughout one night as he struggles to be seen as himself. When his grieving elderly neighbor, Helen, mistakes him for her recently deceased husband, Nico is offered a ready-made masculine identity to slip into and a connection begins to form. However, when Nico finds Helen in his apartment and this identity becomes a reality, Nico must confront his relationship to gender and being perceived. Nico uses dark, haunting 35mm visuals to evoke isolation and loneliness, building to a deeply emotional catharsis at the climax. The liminal spaces that Nico traverses, from the dance floor of a hardcore punk club to an aging apartment building, are filled with the romantic melody of 1940s love songs seeping through the walls. This is a story about how one connection can transcend the boundaries of time, space and gender, allowing us to truly be seen.
