Britain has Jarman. America has Waters. Spain has Almodóvar.
They all shared the same shabby film-making beginnings...and, they all ended up in totally different places.
Jarman was too serious, Waters did it for fun and Almodóvar won an Oscar.
Pepi, Luci, Bom....is as bad as it gets...painfully amateur.
Made 5 years after Franco's death, the intended vitriol is somewhat dampened by its tardiness...better late than never, he who laughs last - laughs longest...as, indeed, is the case.
Interesting to see the humble beginnings of a future Oscar winner...and, quite possibly, the most impersonated director of all time.

The(ir) Blurb...
Almodovar's first film of life in Madrid during the punk era and not one for the squeamish. He covers everything from drugs and sexual violence, to female masochism.
