A mightily frustrating film...why?
Because...in 2014, Carol Morley made the exact same film: The Falling. Despite this version being set in contemporary America as opposed to period England...it's still the same film with - weirdly - the same mistakes. This is like copying exam answers from someone who is predestined to fail!
An other [little] frustration...
Why this film has been included in LGBT film festivals is a conundrum...obviously, there are those that read subtext into everything...especially when a little girl likes to box with her brother in the gym. Not all tomboys are lesbians! A clear case of reading everything into nothing...making an issue out of a tissue of feminisim. Not all feminists are lesbians...!
Still, it does throw up an interesting discussion...LGBT filmmakers making non-LGBT films and non-LGBT filmmakers making LGBT films...ooooh that opens up a whole different can of worms...we digress.
Back to the film...and more frustrations...because, there is obvious talent here. The cinematography is pretty damn good.
Composition...not bad...not great...the constant repetition of sit-ups and dance-moves is baffling...
The central performances...well, Breezy steals the show hands down, no argument...if Alexis Neblett had been cast in the leading role...it would have been a far better, brighter film.
Dialogue...considering there are three credited writers (Carol Morley receives no recognition)...is sparse and threadbare...culminating in the biggest mistake of all...when the ideas dry up (as they obviously did)...go down the surreal route! An ill-judged tactic...for it simply left the audience behind.
The Falling attempts an explanation for these mass faintings/fits...The Fits doesn't. Frustration!
But...the main failing of the film can only be attributed to the uninspired writers...a borrowed/stolen/snatched/plagiarised idea (delete as appropriate) has been merely photocopied...the result: a sloppy, unoriginal, incomplete, frustrating second.

The Fits is a psychological portrait of 11-year-old Toni-a tomboy assimilating to a tight-knit dance team in Cincinnati's West End. Enamored by the power and confidence of this strong community of girls, Toni eagerly absorbs routines, masters drills, and even pierces her own ears to fit in. When a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni's desire for acceptance is twisted.
