The problem with gay Chinese-American films is...they are usually about the same thing.
This - although beautifully filmed - is no exception.
Mother. Tradition. Marriage.
With the over-arching serenity and sentimentality...it's all a bit too Hallmark and melodramatic...to be taken seriously - despite its technical prowess.
