CGiii Comment

A belated and most deserving obituary...for a man who tried to make things better and safer.

Activism is a strange and beguiling creature...if you don't subscribe to 'their' [current] raison d'être and 'their' ways of getting things done...you - usually - are shunned and vilified.

There's only one 'activism' and the LGBT [activist] community have been and still are proud subscribers to this ethos...with a few notable exceptions. The Lavender Panthers being one.

Criminally erased from LGBT history...this film makes partial amends. There's nothing as fickle as the LGBT community!

The(ir) Blurb...

That Was Ray chronicles the life of Reverend Raymond “Ray” Broshears. Ray was at the forefront of the San Francisco gay rights movement in the late 60s to mid-70s. While he preached peace and acceptance, he also founded a militant group, The Lavender Panthers, which curbed hate crimes with the threat of violence. He was a radical and polarizing figure who fought violence with violence, alienating himself from his fellow gay-rights activists and straight peers alike. Due to their controversial methods, Ray and the Panthers were largely forgotten, until now.
