CGiii Comment

It would seem the jury is divided!

Perhaps Night Country would have stood a better chance if it had stood on its own two feet without the 'True Detective' moniker attached. Endless comparisons have been made, ranging from a 'return to form' to nothing 'True Detective' about it.

Considering the original series creator and writer had absolutely nothing to do with this, it would seem fair to agree with the latter.

Look...it's not bad. It's definitely atmospheric. The production values are up there with the best of them. Performances and cast, again, up there with the best of them. It's the actual telling of the story that presents a few problems. Plot-holes as big as sink-holes start appearing early on...being partially explained away by the supernatural and by Inuit tradition beliefs. Yes, it's a big ask...but, Issa López trundles on regardless, regularly shifting focus, forgetting the main story too often, box-ticking with irrelevant sapphic dalliances and subplots that simply disappear.

As for the conclusion, the big reveal...too many unanswered questions - which is odd because Jodi Foster's character is obsessed with asking questions - particularly the right question - throughout. Well, her character failed to ask or answer too many of the 'right' questions. What an anti-climax!
