CGiii Comment

Inspired by actual experiences, Bebe chronicles the fictional life of Bebe Goldberg, an Israeli transgender cabaret star.

Through archival footage and interviews with a variety of people, among them well-known Israeli transgender performers, the film traces Bebe’s life as she survives the Holocaust by hiding in a Polish monastery, strives for acceptance as an actress, and succeeds in her own cabaret. And while Bebe isn’t real, she is based on the very real struggles for survival that transgender Israelis faced during the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

It’s difficult to believe this is a faux documentary, which seems to be the point of this surprising film—to draw a collective biography of transgender Israelis who have not only been neglected by the media, but ignored by history itself.
