CGiii Comment
A ‘colourised’ silent film from the era of the Weimar Republic. Queen Gertrude gives birth to a girl, and on hearing rumours of the King’s death on the battlefeld, passes the newborn off as a boy to secure her line. The King returns, but too late to avert the intrigue, and so Hamlet is raised a man. The drama remains otherwise loyal to Shakespeare, except of course for the titillating reinterpretation of Hamlet’s relationship to Horatio and Ophelia.
