CGiii Comment

The Spanish Quinqui film was a cycle of juvenile delinquent films that emerged at the same time as international classics Scum (1977), The Warriors (1979), Over the Edge (1979) and Christiane F. (1981), but with a unique national sensibility that reflected perceptions of rampant crime, drug use and sexual hedonism among the young in the Post-Franco transition period. Guided by scholars Mery Cuesta (curator of the exhibition "Quinquis de los 80," 2009) and Tom Whittaker (author of The Spanish Quinqui Film, 2021), this original featurette made to accompany Severin Films' stateside release of a trilogy of Eloy de la Iglesia Quinqui films explores this explosive subgenre and the tragic young stars whose legacy it cemented.
