CGiii Comment

It starts off rather promising.....two lads being two lads, full of dreams in a country full of restrictions - both play their roles well.

The second third sees them in prison - being brutalised in mind and body -  it is here that Neo-Nazism is tentatively given an interesting justification......a controversy that could have been the crux of the film - but, it is lost just as quickly as it came - shame.

And then, in the final third, it falls apart - due to the writing, direction and an over-the-top performance by Blumel - the epitome of the Aryan race.

It may have been based on a true story but, the politics behind such opinions are usually strong and passionate - not here.....opinions change as characters come and go - it's a clumsy piece of work with too many loose ends.

The(ir) Blurb...

Repentant ex neo-Nazi Ingo Hasselbach's autobiographical experiences are the basis for "Fuhrer Ex". Two friends dream of escaping the oppression of communist GDR in 1980s in Berlin. When they finally make an attempt, however, they are captured by the authorities and imprisoned. In jail, they allow themselves to be indoctrinated into the hate-fueled neo-Nazi movement to try and survive their incarceration. The question is how much they will allow the ideology to dominate them once they've been released. "Fuhrer Ex" examines the value and costs of both personal and political comradeship.
