Middle-aged college professor Ed Rilke is in love with one of his young students, a sculptor named Isaiah Jenkinson. When Isaiah moves to a mountain cabin to concentrate on his art, Ed follows him and declares his affections. Even though the cabin that they rent is supposedly haunted by a black Great Dane named Blue Boy, the couple lives happily for a brief time. Soon, however, Isaiah becomes romantically interested in farmer Dean, who serves as his model and muse. As Ed's jealousy increases, he destroys Isaiah's sculpture of Dean, prompting Isaiah to smash Ed over the head with a piece of the broken art and accidentally kill him. After Ed's death, novelist Julie Stevens arrives, rents the cabin and is attracted to Dean, who aspires to become a writer. One day, after rejecting local flirt Cathy, Isaiah goes to the local swimming hole, where he finds Dean. After an afternoon playing in the water, Isaiah kisses Dean, who rejects both his advances and his avowal of love. Crushed, Isaiah runs back to the cabin, where he is attacked by Blue Boy and dies after hitting his head. Dean and Julie are then free to begin a life together.
