CGiii Comment

A compelling account about Germany's post-war clean-up...bringing Nazis to trial, hindered by denial and hampered by clandestine [on-going] support for the former regime!

2014 saw Giulio Ricciarelli's Labyrinth of Lies - a glossier account of the same story...which featured a rather suave Fritz Bauer...not the case here. Here, Fritz Bauer, is a gruff survivor, hell-bent of justice...despite his various 'misdemeanours' with male prostitutes!

This is not a in-depth profile of the man...this is a glimpse into a phenomenal legal mind...who played cat-and-mouse with his superiors and inferiors...knowing that what they knew, one slip...could end his career in a flash!

Interesting...in that homosexuality was deemed worse than the crimes of the SS! The irony is obvious...the establishment pitted against an angry, intellectual, Jewish homo...place your bets!

There are gaps in the story...but, as Bauer says...he knew no details...perhaps, the film needed a little more 'furniture' to be fully involving...something more concrete...to get to know [and like] the man. But, as a homosexual with prison-time always lurking in the shadows...he really didn't want to be known...that well.

The safety of anonymity...watch the film to fully understand!
