CGiii Comment
He looked dazzling, could sing and dance, sold 40 million records, appeared in over 30 films, and "Fiesta Mexicana" could be sung by any child. Rex Gildo was a German star. But only the closest confidants knew that he and his manager/discoverer/foster father Fred Miekley had been lovers for decades. To pre-empt press rumors about his gayness, Gildo even married his own cousin. After Miekley's death, Gildo's career began to crack, became addicted to pills and had alcohol problems. In 1999 he fell out of the window of his Munich apartment, he was 63 years old.
Half fictional, half documentary, Rosa von Praunheim tells in his new film Rex Gildo's life as the tragic story of an entertainer who believed himself forced to live a double life in the repressive public of the 1950s and 60s and never dared to break out of his hiding place later. In the game scenes, newcomer Kilian Berger shines as young Rex Gildo and Ben Becker as Fred Miekley.
