Ecclesiastical skulduggery en haut and not as immersed in subtext as you would imagine...but, it's there...lurking like pernicious priests do, in the shadows.
Games of priestly poker and cardinal sins, religious rights [and wrongs], vaulting ambitions and seminarial admissions [and omissions]...this is religious pageantry at its most grotesque and grandiose. Less cat and mouse, more tortoise and the hare.
The thread of corruption runs around and through the entire film...beyond, even, the ending. The Holy See...no sincerity.
