CGiii Comment

In the video Division Movement to Vungtau, 2016, American filmmaker Benjamin Crotty and French artist Bertrand Dezoteux borrow material sourced from the US National Archives, which they combine with animations of fruit to offer a “reverse shot” of US army abuses and excesses. The duo have reworked previously unedited 16mm footage shot by American soldiers stationed in Vietnam during the years 1966-68. The footage pictures the prosaic side of military life, including soldiers swimming in rivers, driving tanks, and receiving Holy Communion in an impromptu jungle mass. The footage is edited into seven short vignettes, each portraying the fictional adventures of a group of anthropomorphic fruits during an unspecified 20th century American military mission abroad.
