CGiii Comment

Keepin’ it Real questions the notions of black popular culture in relation to W.E.B. Du Bois’ research on double consciousness and Frantz Fanon’s research on « collective catharsis », in order to take visitors on an immersive trip into the subconscious of a contemporary black mind. The four-channel video installation mixes music, performance, and cinema to critique the singular narratives existing within mainstream popular culture, thus offering counter-narratives of blackness, queerness, and gender, utilizing eclectic references ranging from Greek mythology, vogue ballroom culture, surrealism, and satirical television.
